Classic British Aircraft- new TV series 14 August

Post by lancfan »

Last night I saw the trailer for this new series, it doesn't state how many programmes there are but it carried a good list of aircraft to be covered ranging from the Gladiator to the Sea Hawk with both archive and new footage of preserved airworthy machines being shown. The first two programmes will be shown on "Quest" on the 14th August.
I have found their website, they are 30 minute programmes and two will be shown each week starting at 22.00 hrs. the first two are for Jetliners (Trident & VC-10) and the following episode is for Surveillance (Canberras & Nimrod) they are narrated by Harry Enfield.

David.

Quest?! Dang it. That's not on my poor man tv package

Hopefully they will be put up on YouTube by a naughty pirate soon!

It should be Reuben, Quest is on Freeview, channel 37 and Quest+ is on channel 38 if you want to watch it twice.

Its not a "new" program as such, just new to that channel. I've watched the whole series a few times, quite good if a little dated now. The Information channel ( forget the number) on Sky have a series Visions of War which runs documentaries and sometimes information films made for the forces or by aircraft manufacturers. Worth a watch if you can get it.

Yeah, I've also seen most (maybe all) of them a few times, on one of the Discovery channels IIRC....?

Two aircraft in each episode - as well as the VC10/Trident and Canberra/Nimrod epiodes, I can also remember:
Gladiator/Blenheim - Sea Vixen/Sea Hawk - Meteor/Vampire - Victor/Buccaneer
There's an episode with a couple of early 'copters..... I can also remember the Anson, Shackleton, Gannet, Dragon Rapide and Beverley but can't remember the pairings, and I must have also missed at least one from that list because I've got an odd number there.
Currently on bench: ICM 1/72 Tupolev Tu-2

They are around ten years old now but still worth watching. Made at a time when Discovery could still make an intelligent documentary.

Indeed. When I moved over here, one of the top shows on Discovery was 'Wings', which featured a different classic aircraft (mostly American of course) each week. There were around 50 different 1 hour shows, IIRC. My wife just picked up a 6-pack of shows on VHS tapes at the charity store - which shows you how old they are now! I can't see them ever making shows like that again...

I thought so. He sounds like he's actually interested in what he narrating about imho.

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer was the other one and the helicopters were the Bristol Sycamore and the Westland Wasp.

I've seen these programmes loads of times. If you haven't seen them before you're in for a treat :)

Watched the Nimrod segment on the edition shown last night. These programmes are now ten years old so a lot of what is being said is well out of date - if still interesting.

I watched the Buccaneer and Victor followed by the Bristol Sycamore and the Westland Wasp last night and enjoyed both.
