Best kit straight out of the box. NOTHING TO ADD
I have a liking for out of the box builds. So what in your opinion is the best kit to build straight out of the box with nothing extra warranted.

Depends on what genre and scale you like to build. One of the nicest aircraft kits I've built was the Tamiya 1/48 P-51D. Great detail, accurate, almost perfect fit. Airfix's new-tool 1/72 P-51D is another contender. There are so many nice kits out there I'm sure you'll get a wide variety of suggestions.

Tamiya's 1/48 Beaufighter ranks way up. Love that kit.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

That may well just have jumped to the top of my 'to build' list

The Airfix 1/72 scale Harrier GR1 or GR3 makes an Excellent OOB.

Some of the trumpter 1/72 tank kits are really good, sturmtiger, KV1 and IS3 are brilliant. I would happily build any of those again. The tiger 2 porsche turret is a bit soft however it does have zimmerite, something I'm not aware of any other having. The revell panzer 3 is pretty good, so is the tiger 1 apart from it length and link tracks which are 3 different widths.

Hi longstreet2763, have you got a bit more info, eg. What type of model? Aircraft, tank, ship, car? And what is your preferred scale? 1/72, 1/48, 1/32?
Then people will be better placed to give you a useful answer.
If it's 1/72 aircraft then, as others have said, the new tooled Airfix offerings are pretty good and also not too expensive. The P-51 and the Zero spring to mind as being really nice little kits OOB for around £5.
I build absolutely everything OOB anyway, even if it's a tragic old kit!

I have to agree with Migrant, the Tamiya Mustang is way out there. I built the Korean War F-51 version a few years ago and still havent come across another kit quite as good.

In another genre entirely -- the Tamiya 1/24 Lexus LFA is an outstanding kit that needs nothing but careful painting to create a fantastic replica...

The Airfix 1/72 Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 is a brilliant little kit straight from the box and so are the new Hawker Typhoon and ragwing Hurricane kits.
On the other hand, if you want something in 1/48 then get one of the ProfiPak issues of the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk.IX.

Unfortunately, i don't still have it.

Hi Zee28 my preference is for 1/72 WWii and WW1 aircraft and for variation 1/20 F1 cars. I have a real aversion to after market products unless as previous stated its been removed for political reasons than I will go out and buy the correct decals etc. But it phases me how people are being paid good wages to research this stuff but many modellers find fault with the kits. Maybe the company researchers need to be sacked.

In fairness, I think the majority of aftermarket stuff is to add extra detail which isn't possible/economical to include in an injection-moulded kit, although there are certainly some correction sets out there.longstreet2763 wrote:Hi Zee28 my preference is for 1/72 WWii and WW1 aircraft and for variation 1/20 F1 cars. In 1/72 you can't go wrong with Tamiya's 1/72 line (P-47, P-51, Bf109 etc), although I'd avoid some of Tamiya's re-boxed Italeri kits. But, some of the new Airfix new tools are fast approaching similar quality at a very reasonable price. The newer Eduard 1/72 kits are also superbly detailed (such as the Hellcat, MiG-15 and Bf110) but maybe not as straightforward a build. However I'd say they are your best bet for 1/72 WW1 subjects.

The Hobby Boss MiG15 seems to be a popular oob kit.
Only needs some weight to be added to the nose.

Re: Best kit straight out of the box. NOTHING TO ADD
Hi, Just finished a Stuka from Airfix. Nice kit, nothing to worry about. I have built the F-105G from Trumpeter which had some well engineered sections but went together very nicely. Also could say the same for the Fujimi F-4G. Looked good when finished even with my 'smudgy' style of painting!.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!
