What Haven't you built today...or any day??

Got something to say about the hobby of model making?

Hahaaa, oh that was funny.
Yes, i believe you all have heard tales, huddled around the primus, of people that have never built such things.... :-D

Just never taken my fancy really... never really been into planes, except WW1 stuff, have lots of those lurking in the cupboard.

Well, that is a bit self-sustaining that way. The only way to build up the skills is to dive in and do it. There's a few people here who I suspect will be more than happy to supply (no doubt contradictory) advice should you want/need some or get stuck. You don't need to break the bank for the figures either; the Miniart figures can be found for a bit over 10 pounds (double that for mounted figures).

The Tamiya 1/16 Luftwaffe ace is very good and usually the most reasonably priced of their large figures. Mini Art ones are good, but of tricky to convert soft plastic and hollow bodied. I usually make a sprue tree and blu tack 'skeleton' to build the body parts around.

I hate to say this but I can't think of any model type or subject that I've not built. Mind you, I started at 6. I even did those horrible Airfix birds, you know the ones I mean, but only because my Auntie Dorothy bought them for me one birthday. I was massively disappointed as I thought they were a total waste of money when I'd much rather have had a plane or a tank or something decent. I built them, but they soon got converted into tactical versions with bombs and torpedoes from the bits box.

It was only when I got older and realised that Auntie Dorothy had a wicked sense of humour that the truth came out: She said to my mum that it was time I stopped messing about with model aeroplanes and got my hands on a pair of........................................

Never done a motorcycle, something intimidating about them for me. I do have a German BMW though with side car in the stash the WW2 type so I might get there one day.

Never done a submarine, I have an early Uboat though in the stash. For the most part subs kind of all look the same to me and they aren't too exciting to look at.

Never done dinosaurs or animals, not in plastic anyway.

No real life spaceships.

No sailing ships, I think I would stuff those right up.

Hiya Saxon
You know you aren't the first person that I've heard say that.
If you wanted to try a bike, I would recommend one of the range of 250's that Tamiya make. A nice starting point and good fun easy builds. Mostly they have 3 or 4 colours (semi gloss black, Silver, Aluminium and White) and are a good starting point to try your hand at a scooter :-D

Reading this made me realize that I've never built a motorcycle either. How did that happen?
Maybe a good idea for a group build?

As for Mad Steve having never built a Spitfire - must be some kind of tofu eating, sandle wearing beatnik!

Hey Steve,

I'll have a look at those. I think my reason for finding them intimidating is kind of silly in a way, and also partially based on not being familiar with them in life form or model form.

They also don't have guns on them usually which makes them confusing as well lol

I'm pretty much the same, though I haven't built a space craft since I left school, and I don't do Sci-Fi unless you count Gerry Anderson stuff

Also never done a building of any kind, so much so that I didn't even think of them as "kits" when I first responded to this.
