Thanks to Captain Tiger, this arrived recently:

It looks a cracking kit, tonnes of detail, no visible flash and the box is stuffed with parts!

Continuing with the Bandai theme from James' post above, two new arrivals; these are their 'palm-sized' kits (which I guess are 'box-scale') which can be got for pocket money including postage from Japan but which are still fantastically detailed for their size.

Now I can blame all this on Tom, because he kindly gave me the 1/350 HMS Dreadnought, this put me back in a Nautical mood and I kept finding these books.

OOOHHH do I feel a Revell/matchbox corvett coming on soon Alan.... (you can get a lot of improvements and etch stuff for them if you are so inclined... On other hand you could go the other route with plans and or the basics from Fleetscale and go it your own way totally.

I can and would fully recommend a coastal craft kit - their insrtuctions and history on the individual subjects are impressive as are the components in the kits. Not cheap, but good and worth the money.

Chris I have a Matchbox Flower Corvette that I started about 20 years ago, that is 1/3 built, I picked the Corvette book to jog me into finishing it.

I would love one of the coastal craft kits, but the price is out of my range  I have a little voice in the back of my head that keeps saying, "you know you want a Fairmile A, so why not scratch build one?" Hence the book just to keep the voice in my head quite :-D

Check out Fleetscale.com Alan, as they have a lot of plans, base core hulls and a lot of other suitable components and general info on various items which could be of use up this type of avenue, and some of the John Lambert stuff too.

@splash the Ship Models from Kits is very useful and inspiring. Though I've wasted a lot of time searching for Arabic Gum glue ie old style Gloy paper glue, no one seems to make it anymore.

I thought the same when I read the chapter on rigging, have you tried "The Works" or "Poundland" as its the type of thing they sell.

Gum Arabic seems to be used for rolling cigarettes & cigars and also in some bead work ... at least from the search hits I got.
