I'm really beginning to take to IPA..

Those little plastic containers with blobs of paint that come with Airfix starter sets? The ones everyone is always tossing out is disgust and derision? Drench in IPA, and they work perfectly, and since you have to thin them down somewhere between 5 and 10 to 1, they can cover a lot of plastic too :-D

I use them a lot to be honest! Thinned as you say with IPA or Tamiya, and given a whirl in my (non) patented paint shaker (aka my scroll saw in the garage), they are very useful indeed
Best wishes

Hmm reading this I'm glad I saved all mine and didn't toss them in the bin!
I do use revell's quite alot though, I think airfix could atleast make them look alot more appealing like Revell do in their starter sets!
Then maybe they wouldn't be thrown away as much

Vallejo Model Air is the solution - sprays straight from the bottle - no thinning required :ha:

Whoever came up with the idea that it would be nice to have a different set of paints for hand and airbrush work clearly never had to do touch-up or colour matching between hand and airbrushed parts. It's not just different bottles, it's different pigments..

You could use VMA with a hairy stick too

Vallejo are my paints of choice, better than any others IMHO :)

As a user of the hairy stick,I find there are no truly usuable acrylic paints, but I have not tried Vallejo Model Air yet,I have tried ordinary Vallejo, and they are good for small details, painting larege areas they are to be found wanting. Are the model air any better regarding large areas Ratch.

Basically, I airbrush large areas and treat the detail to the hairy stick. I know some folks shun the spray+compressor route, but I adopt whatever works for me. There's no right or wrong way - its what works for you - and I encourage everyone to try other methods and see how you get on
I'd imagine that using VMA with a brush would be like applying several coats of another acrylic that has been thinned

I use enamels but Games Workshop acrylics were fine for brush painting. Although I mainly used them for details and they're not cheap these days.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Hi Celt,

I know I'll be shot down in flames for this but Humbrol's acrylics (which I used to hate) are perfectly good for brush painting with the right techniques - I can PM you some tips if you like.

David (Lancfan) gets good results from Revel paints too.

Regards

Stuart

I won't be doing the shooting though.. I'm no particular fan of acrylics, but since I found out how to thin them for airbrush, the Humbrols are at the top of my "if I had to switch now" list.

They're not bad, but they do need thining and for brush painting at least they do dry quickly on the brush - That's why I keep a dish of clean water to dip my brush in during painting.

Cheers
