New Airfix Wellington 1C for 2018

Post by shangos70 »

Announced on their workbench blog today, an new mold Wellington 1C in 1/72 for 2018.
CAD images show a lot of internal detail.
Won't be on my wants list though, I would have preferred a scaled down version of the Sea Vixen but it fits in with the plan of retooling the old classics.
Ahh well can't please everyone.

Excellent from me! I was thinking of getting a Trumpeter one but was put off by all the negative reviews, a decent Wimpy is well overdue.

It looks nice, but why all the internal detail that can't be seen and will add to the cost?

I really can't see the point when manufacturers add things like chemical toilets, flares and navigators station. I would rather have a set of aircrew or choice of weapon loads.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Available on the Airfix website to pre-order;
https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/shop/pre-o ... -1-72.html;

Show your faith in Airfix, pre-order; you only pay when its ready to be sent out to you and you can cancel the pre-order at any time
I've placed my pre-order

It can also be pre-ordered on Hannants website as well

splash; as I understand it Airfix cannot get a decent figure sculptor to do aircrew. Apparently they are in short supply

Unseen interior detail ? Agree with Splash.

The manufacturers read the magazine reviews. No one reviews the actual kit anymore, they add stuff and weather the ^&%* out of them. Then they ding a kit w/o a toilet because the XYZ kit had one. Get the magazines and reviewers back to basics instead of patting their own backs and the manufacturers might follow.

As Shangos says; you can't please everyone! :grin:
Internal detail may not be visible but it's more faithful and prototypical than one without, and of course we know it's there :grin: That said, a set of crew would be more desirable for a lot of people. Could Airfix not purchase them from those suppliers who offer crew sets and add them to the kit or at least sell them as an add-on I wonder?
I enjoyed my recent B17, absent crew and all as I very rarely build aircraft in flight. I will buy this when it comes out as it's going to be a great kit and will help support Airfix. I'll make my own mind up re accuracy issues and the like; if it looks like a Wellington then that'll do for me. The missing rivet beneath the 7th flange nurdler is of no importance to me.
Best wishes

Jim

Going off topic a wee bit; I like my bombers to have crew, oddly I prefer fighters not to have. I've decided, as I have the means, I'm going to start casting up my own crew. I'll make special moulds for doing pilots in lead based white metal for nosewheel aeroplanes.

Actual think the intervals is warranted on the Wellie as there is a lot of glazing around the airframe. It up to you how much you add/paint. Yes there is a cost involved but hey guys the market has changed. If you want 1970 levels of detail build kits from 1970. I think it's going to be a great kit for those that want a kit of this important aircraft.

I think James is right - there is a lot of glazing on this aircraft and I think it'd look strange without anything.

Personally I can take it or leave it when it comes to internal detail - especially in 1/72. If it's there fine, if not no biggy.

I'm sure it'll be a fine kit though, I probably won't get one as I've never built a bomber - just can't seem to get into them. I'll be supporting airfix by buying some of their other up and coming releases.

Just a thought though - just because the detail is supplied in the kit, it doesn't mean you have to use it. I've built a couple of the NT Spitfires now where I've left out a lot of the internals. You can't see it anyway and I found they're easier to assemble.

Cheers

Nice memories of building the Airfix B.III Christmas day 1975. This predates the Roy Cross artwork release.

Markings for a 311 Squadron Mk 1c please Airfix. And if the Airfix Whitley is anything to go by, a re-release in Coastal Command markings of the same machine & squadron please Airfix.

I hope the toolmaker will have a copy of the terrible Matchbox Wellington. An example of how not to produce the geodetic surface detail. This will probably make or break the kit.

As someone who has both the Matchbox and the Trumpeter Wellington in their stash, I would say that Airfix could do a lot worse than Matchbox's attempt at the geodetic surface detail. It's actually quite restrained and much better than Trumpeter's attempt which has elements of the waffle iron about it.

I have the Matchbox Wimpy built and found it was a really nice kit to build and looks right when done

PS; I saw the newly covered Wellington wing at Cosford last year and I think Matchbox got the look pretty good
