I always thought Matchbox did a good job, I probably won't get this until I have built the Revell/MPM MkII in my stash.

While I applaud Airfix for their increased internal details and new releases of their back catalogue , I find I'm firmly in the camp that hidden detail is wasted.
It usually adds to a fiddly build and of course additional costs of the kit to start with. I'd much rather have good detail under a large transparency or gun turret and wheel wells maybe even go as far as the tread on tyres, and from what I understand the Shackleton wheels were wrong hence Barracuda producing replacements. Get the outside right and worry less about putting a bog in!
I built the Matchbox kit and you can't see anything through the fuselage glazing because of internal framework.

The new JP is a prime example of not getting it right, with the missing upper fuselage intakes and incorrect canopy framing , given there are lots about to crawl over obvious details are being missed or are incorrect.
Like I said, manufacturers today can't please everyone and I think the market is now driven by a desire to detail everything to the nth degree, and as has been said in this thread the magazine reviews rarely reflect on ease of build but on how many aftermarket freebies and weathering potions they can throw at it. It's great to see what can be done but I don't think it would encourage a newbie to the hobby.

I agree, Shane. What is the point of extensive detail that can't be seen? and then to add that detail at the expense of getting visible things like wheels and engine cowlings wrong? An accurate shape is more important that a finely executed chemical bog in the dark recesses of the fuselage IMHO. I don't bother with mags now after getting fed up of reviewers constantly using expensive aftermarket add-ons as opposed to building the kit OOB and showing me what my hard-earned would actually be buying. A kit review should be just that, a review of what is in the box, no more, no less. Rant over.

Pre-order cost from Airfix is £30.99 so postage free :-D (unless they raise the post-free order values.... )

Same cost as the new B-17
Best wishes

aye, and as a club member it costs more
£30.99 - 10% = £27.89, under £30 so add £4.98 postage = £32.87

I'm 100% with you on that John ;-)

I shall have to get one (or more) :ha:

The Trumpeter Wellingtons are some of their best kits. The surface detail is perhaps a bit overdone but otherwise I think they have the shapes pretty well nailed. In 1/48, it's likely that the Trumpeter kits are the best you'll get. That said, I'm ecstatic about the new Airfix 1/72 kit. It is likely to be the most accurate Wellington in any scale so I will surely get several.
WIP Hasegawa 1/72 Yak-3, Hasegawa 1/72 Polikarpov I-16 Type 24, Hasegawa 1/72 J2M3 Raiden, Hasegawa 1/72 Mosquito NF.2, Airfix 1/48 Mosquito NF.30
Last kit completed: Hasegawa 1/72 Yakovlev Yak-3

I agree wholeheartedly that the manufacturers should strive to make the exteterior details of a model as accurate as possible (practicable?). However, I have had a great deal of fun and improved my modelling skills by adding the internal details provided in modern kits, as well as increasing my knowledge of the subjects I am building.

It IS a pity that much of this detail is hidden in the completed kit and I would love to see the option of transparent/removable "cutout" panels made available for those who wish to display the interiors of their models. What do others think? It is not something I have come across myself, but I would be interested to know if anyone else has - either manufactured or scratch-built.

Regards

A second pair of fuselage sides in clear plastic would be very useful if included with these new kits.

what others said regarding exterior vs. interior.

But the weakest link in the Airfix chain continues to be their clear parts. It seems to be kit by kit, but in general, they still stink. What good is a turret interior if the frames look like they've been melted on, and the glass is a scale foot thick?

Give me thin clear parts, with petite framing detail, and I may be compelled to add some interior then.
