Not modelling...

Post by Martin R »

Hi folks,

Not been around here much recently, so just thought I'd send a quick message saying that I'm still lurking on and off but not really doing any modelling at the moment.
No real reason that I can identify; I just don't feel the urge at the mo.

In the meantime, I'm trying to get rid of some of the stash that I'm never going to get round to doing (even tho' I've not been modelling, I've still been buying). I had a quick rummage in the loft and came up with over 40 kits I no longer want / need. I reckon this is less than 10% of the total tho', so there'll be more to go.

Anyway, hope normal service will be resumed at some point.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin.
Good to hear from you. Always a bit worrying when someone vanishes from the forum. Looking forward to your return to modelling and maybe perusing the kits you are selling.

All the best.

It happens. I am also planning on cutting down my stash and have boycotted Airfix especially. Won't be buying anymore kits either.

Can be a bit of a sad hobby at times. So much more to life.

Been there - only just came back in fact. Good luck at whatever you do for a hobby, and have fun regardless.

It happens, Martin. I've been staring at a part-finished Boeing-737 for the last three weeks and just cannot motivate myself to get on and finish it or indeed to do any other modelling. Usually what happens with me is that the mojo suddenly returns as quickly as it left. No rhyme nor reason. These days I don't fret about it or try to force the issue and instead will go with the flow - it's only a hobby after all! Take care and hopefully we'll see you building again before too long.

Also there. Modelling mojo seemed to drain from me a lot over the last weekend, been playing, sorry working on my railway layout. Feel good about the work done and thinking of at least sitting at the bench today. (After I've cut some bridge supports for the railway!!).
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

We all go through it - I am currently also in a slump, though I am working on something at the moment that I hope will be what turns it around. Don't force it - it will come back in time.

Thanks, chaps.

Not going to force it, as you wisely advise. I'll be back at some point.

Same here Martin. For a longer time nothing happens on my workbench but I read the forum daily. I thought it was only me but others have it too sometimes. But as Arnie said: I'll be back.

Hi Martin R,I too am not modelling anymore, but like bassman I read UAMF everyday. Its not that my mojo has gone its just my models are not as good as the models on here and the more I try to do better the worse they get.So I just read the posts by others for my model fix, and leave the building to those with more talent than me.

I too am off my game. The B17 I started in January remains unfinished after an aggressive start. I'll get back to it at some point (my wife will only stand for it occupying the rec room table for only so long).

I suspect that I've been lucky so far in dodging the mojo bullet, although there have been times when a particular kit has lost it's appeal halfway through which can dampen the enthusiasm somewhat :???:

I am concerned though if people stop building because they regard their builds as being 'not good enough'; that is not what this forum is about at all (or at least that's my take on it) and I have yet to see any model that has been posted on here being met with anything other than approval and praise, even if only for the effort and perseverance that has obviously gone into finishing it! I am aware that there are some forums out there that might make folk feel a little 'inadequate'; this is NOT one of them! 8-)

I would ask (on my own behalf, I'm nothing to do with the forum other than being a member) that ALL our members not only look in, but that they carry on building and posting up their builds regardless of what they think their standard of finish is; there are far too many other reasons out there in the real world just waiting to interfere in our hobby without our own perceptions of ability or standard getting in the way!

To all those that have been struck by the mojo bullet, I wish you a speedy recovery and return to building (and posting)
Best wishes

Jim

I haven't done any modeling since sometime last year. I still do check in now and again here. Hopefully, the will to model will return sometime soon

I've been knocked on here in the past due to some of my builds. I don't really care but it did bring on an extended break from the forum. I have also been bullied on a modeling forum which has had it's effect as well.

A lot of forums have a clique mentality which of course excludes outsiders. Hence why you don't get too many busy forums anymore like you had 10 years ago. Everyone blames sites like Reddit, Twitter etc but the politics of many forums play a huge role in their own demise.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear that, Saxon. Personally, I have always found being a member of this forum to be very positive and that it lacks the snobbery and cliques that I have experienced for instance with car forums in the past. I recall on one car forum, that shall remain nameless, being ignored by a good percentage of the other members until I had amassed around 200 posts and even then acceptance was grudging by a number of them I think because I didn't have a "classic" enough car. It was the first forum of any description that I had ever joined and I could have been put off forums for life but I resolved not to judge by one bad experience. In my opinion and experience on UAMF, arguments about accuracy, colour schemes and what have you take second place to encouragement of others and enthusiasm for the hobby. I am aware that I have one of the highest post counts of the current membership (maybe I need to get out more :ha: ) but it doesn't matter to me whether a member has one post or ten thousand, I will still give encouragement or help where I can. Certainly this is one of the friendliest and least judgemental forums I have been a member of and I can't praise it highly enough.
