How big is your Pile of Shame?

Got something to say about the hobby of model making?

There's no shame in that monster being a bench queen. I've never heard of one being built in under a year. I have a good friend who's acquired 36 of these kits and if he started on them today, he'll be building them until he's 101 years old.

Maybe that's his cunning plan for longevity?

Actually I've remembered that I also have a 1/72 Matchbox Corvette part built; when I get around to finishing it I'm hoping to fit a motor and RC.....
Best wishes

Nice! A friend gave me the Bandai 350th scale Space Battleship Yamato some years ago and I have no idea when it will get built or even if I will live long enough to get around to it!

It sounds like it’s time for a “Pile of Shame” GB for kits that were started but not touched for over a year.

:-D
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

If I just count those that are hanging around outside their boxes I'd say about 30. If I include all of my started but unfinished kits it's around 280, some of which I started back in the 1980s. Quite a lot of them stall at the filling/sanding stage as that's not my favourite part of a build. I did finish a couple this year that I started back in 2011 though. :)

I don't have any part-built kits except the one I'm working on atm. Sorry guys, I'm letting the side down.

Seriously, I'm on a limited income, so it's a bit like the owner of racing pigeons - if one has a slow bird, into the pot it goes. Similarly, if I can't finish a kit for any reason, it goes on to ebay and I recoup a little bit of the loss. It's only happened three times, though. I'm stubborn. :)

My confessional for this ...

Since going through a lifestyle change this year, my available space for everything, including modelling has changed somewhat, so I had to be ruthlessly realistic. Consequently, anything started, anything languishing and anything that was looking past its best had to go.

I gave a number of built kits to fellow UAMF forum members and also some members of AMSIG at Telford, and a number also went into the give a kit away for charity donation to rehome it thing ...

I now have a strict mantra: it goes together or it goes in the bin. I don't expect shake-n-bake from all kits, but my days of fighting something into submission are past. It is meant to be a hobby and relaxing.

Since Telford I have started 2 plastic kits, and had issues with warping and as kits were old, they have gone in bin. I did salvage a few fittings etc from both for spares box, but not much. I also have 2 other Airfix ship kits on the go, and in both cases, it is taking two boxings of the same kit to get one acceptable model, so there will again be more stuff for bin in due course

I only have one. Its an Airfix 1/400 ship. Like Chrism said in the above post, I just bin anything thats sitting too long. Especially if its an old kit thats going to take an eternity of filling and sanding. I think the only reason I'm keeping the ship kit is because I bought a PE set to go with it and it wasn't cheap!
