Re: How Long?
Shortest build since restarting in the hobby in 2011, 8 months, average around a year
Been modelling for years, still learning . . . .
Model kits are meant to be assembled . . . . . . . . . . eventually.

Re: How Long?
I spent a year messing around with the new tool B-17 (the only completion of the year 2017), but so far this year I have 3 Spitfires almost ready for paint and I have to build the T72 my boy bought me for Christmas. I usually average about 1 kit a month when I'm on a roll.

Over the years one of the u/c doors has gone AWOL and a new one needs to be scratched and I need to print off large serials for the underside and booms and it would be finished, somehow something else always seems to get in the way!

Re: How Long?
So a bit of everything then?
Thanks for the responses guys - some really interesting posts.
I guess my bench time is pretty limited, I'm only getting in about 1-2 hours a week if I'm lucky, certainly never more than 1/2 in one go.
I think I'm going to try and do a bit everyday from now on, even if it's just a few minutes.

The same - except I'm retired. Using acrylics has speeded my build time upSpaceowl wrote:I'm looking for work, so I have plenty of time to make kits. I'm also more of a kit assembler than a modeller, so I don't put in the time on builds that I perhaps ought too.

Re: How Long?
I start and stop builds as I'm always working on multiple things at once. But if I estimate of how many sessions-worth of modeling any particular type of kit I'd say the breakdown would be as follows:
1/72 Single Engine prop = 1.5 to 2 weeks
1/72 multi engine or jet = 3 weeks
1/48 single engine prop = 3 weeks
1/48 multi engine or jet = 4-5 weeks
1/32 aircraft = 2-3 months
1/72 and 1/48 armor = 2-3 weeks
1/35 armor = 2-3 months
Any scale ship or automotive = never finished one
The reason the larger scaled aircraft and armor take so long is due to painting and weathering. Processes that I really enjoy and put a lot of effort into. I'd say 25% of a build time is construction, 25% on basic painting (including masking and laying down base colors), and 50% goes to shading, fading, and weathering. The fun stuff.

Re: How Long?
Got my Hasegawa Cougar out the loft to finish it off now that I can make my own decals and not have to rely on paying a fortune for long out of print ones. Unfortunately I dropped it whilst navigating the low beams and The Insulation Monster immediately devoured a main door, a nose door, a horizontal stabilizer and two pylons.
After a flurry of scratching replacement parts using the survivors as templates it is now back to the stage where I left off about 25 years ago!
