I've just been given an Airfix catalogue from the 70s. Makes interesting reading.

My library has grown more than a few times in the last 6 months, but here's the buy of the century, IMO.

Image

from The Aviation Bookshop, http://www.aviation-bookshop.com;, 40 GBP and that much again for air mail to the USA as it's 650 very heavy pages.

Here's the frontispiece, gets my heart a thumpin', being an RRAC (Fordsons are OK also) hyper-fan ....

Now, that's the only color print like that in there and there's more text than photos, but for me, it's worth every penny for the history and descriptions that clarify a lot of the photos I have accumulated ....

A pleasant visit to a local cheap book shop allowed me to nab these books all new and reduced to £2.99 or £3.99, I calculate that as a saving of just under £60 :-D

I recently read the first of the Bolitho novels by Alexander Kent. Pretty good; while not up to the standards of Patrick O'Brian, it is on a par with the Hornblower series by CS Forester, which I enjoyed. So, staying in chronological order, I ordered a few more from Abebooks, then discovered a chap on eBay selling the set in two lots. I won the second half (11 books) for a net total of just under $9.....So, I just need a few from the middle....!

Cronilogically the first is Midshipman Bolitho, I have the entire set, its one of my old time favorites.

Kent's actual first Bolitho novel is 'To Glory we steer' which has him commanding a Frigate during the campaign that leads to the battle of the saintes.

I have read the entire run at least twice, they are all quite excellent.

Cheers, Chris. I prefer to read these series in chronological order - did the same with Sharpe, Hornblower and Aubrey/Maturin - so I've only read the Midshipman anthology so far. I'm accumulating the rest, as our local library only has four books from the middle of the series.....

The next one for you paul is 'Stand into danger'.

You will enjoy the ride, there are 23 novels in the Bolitho series.

I wish I could find an old Airfix Magazine Chris, that would be great.
