Calling Colonials!

Post by Stamford »

Vultee Vengence RAAF. I´ve spent an hour surfing trying to to get the underside colour - is it sky or light blue? Can´t find something I believe :frown: I´m quite happy with foliage green/dark earth uppers but would appreciate some input!

Cheers Brews - I did see one pic from a mueseum sky grey - this aircraft perhaps? I disregarded it as all the other build and references were sky or light blue. Now i´m wondering although I´ve been fooled by meuseum renovations before!

Light blue is what I was afraid of  as I try to keep to Tamiya. Reckon thats it though.

Thanks for the input - seems like one of those controversial colours! Even Urban hasn´t got it listed!

Model Airplane International have a free downloadable camouflage mask for the Vengance here ,might be useful. The undersides of RAAF machines are Sky Blue. http://www.modelairplaneinternational.com/; scroll down to RJ Carauna camou masks click on "more".

That was an interesting link - havn´t seen this before. Had a bit of trouble navigating the site though. Think I can manage the masking for this one but I have always had a Viggen at the back of my mind and this might make this possible...............

I think this one is a can of worms and depends on when and where . From memory these aircraft came from the RAF in India . So unless later in their life they have been repainted in RAAF colours , they would have been in RAF colours or maybe even US equivilants of those RAF colours ?

It is confusing! The only thing people seem to agree on is "foliage green" which would seem to indicate a tropical paint job at some point. I´m going for foliage green, earth brown and light blue and thats that! Now I have to decide on the decal option - it´s a nose art boxing with an option of a naked lady which is very appealing but this aircraft then has white tailsurfaces which I did a while back on a P39 - I liked the whole camo look. Decisions decisions!

Some RAAF were camou Light Earth/Foliage Green and some were Earth Brown(darker)/Foliage Green all with Sky Blue undersides. From late 1944 they appear to be Foliage Green on all uppers and Sky Blue undersides. Choices ,choices !

If you google Spartan Paints Australia you should be able to download a colour chart of RAAF paints. I got mine several years ago though and lost it during the move out here.
