Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
The detail work is looking fantastic Shaun. The Hawk is a nice looking kite. Now I kinda want one, seeing as how the RCAF flies them too.

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Many thanks GMG.
Well, it's been a while since my last update but I have been fiddling around with the paint scheme of JP and Hawk. Paint was all applied by airbrush with loads of masking being required and it was a proper PITA if I'm honest. Save for the black nose anti-dazzle areas which are Tamiya, all paints are enamels for a change - Revell 5 Matt White, Humbrol Hu-174 Signal Red and Hu-40 Pale Grey. The grey should be Light Aircraft Grey but I don't have any in stock so it's tough cheddar on that score, Hu-40 is near enough for jazz! Both tinlets of Humbrol used here date from the 1970's and had never been opened - the smell is different from the modern stuff and certainly took me back a few years!
I'm reasonably pleased with the results, there are touch ups required (aren't there always? ) largely due to the rather poor performance of the Tamiya tape I used for the bulk of the in-fill masking. Normally I swear by Tamiya tape but it didn't quite cut the mustard in failing to adhere as well as I would expect thereby allowing some overspray in. Not a serious problem on either model but annoying nevertheless. The colour demarcation lines on both models were masked using cheaper Hobby Craft tape, which performed very well with just a couple of very slight bleed throughs on both models, which should be easy to rectify.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
The extra work on the Hawk especially is paying off nicely; a cracking pair and no mistake
Best wishes

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
I'll second that. Love the scheme. I have got the new Jet Provost somewhere and I will have to do one now. Excellent work Shaun and I can't wait to see them finished mate.
Cheers

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Many thanks for your interest and kind comments folks. After the excitement of removing the masking it's now on to the more mundane tasks of touching up and gloss varnishing in preparation for the decals - AKA the next interesting bit

Hi Shaun,
These trainers are looking great. I've made a few now in this scheme and have found that white roundel backing decals are well worth using to stop the red/white demarcation line from showing through. Some kit decals are better than others of course but I like to use them just in case.
Sorry if you've already thought about it. Just thought I would mention it in case it helps.
All the best
Stu

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Lovely looking job on both of those builds Shaun - I love that scheme, it's by far the beat carried on the Hawk (and the RAF in general). You've done a grand bit of painting.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Many thanks guys. Stu has raised a very valid point about the difficulties that are sometimes caused by strong colours such as red bleeding through decals - the last time that happened to me was with a set of Hasegawa F-4J U.S. Navy "stars and bars" decals that allowed the Gull Grey upper surface colour to show through and thankfully I managed to save the situation with some aftermarket LTV Corsair II decals that I had in stock. I am using aftermarket decals here on both models and, I'm fingers crossed here, AM decals usually have decent colour density. Both models have now received a gloss clear coat and I will put the decals to the test over the weekend!
