Just an idea but have a look in artist shops or even W H Smith for artist's chalks; rub them on sandpaper to produce pigments, add them to a little water with a drop or two of Fairy Liquid (other brands are available folks! ) for a water based wash.....simples and cheap :-D
Best wishes

Artist's Chalk pastels make good weathering powder too. Just rub on a bit of coarse sandpaper. Cheaper than buying lots of fancy powders

And good luck bashing the thesis into shape

Thanks chaps! I was wondering about artists chalks but I was worried they wouldn't stay on the model - is there a particular surface they like to bind to i.e. matt or satin? And is there a way to seal them in with a varnish or something? Or will they simply stay on? Thanks for your help again!

A matt finish is best for them to settle onto, then a light over spray with varnish to suit the eventual finish to seal works fine for me.

I look forward to seeing your efforts SBO as I tend to shy away from panel washes and it's about time that I gave the technique a go. Best of luck with that monster thesis as well

Right, well I haven't been here in an age! Real life kicked in just before Christmas, and it meant that I have been unable to model at all since November! So I thought I would check in and let you know that work on the Me 109 has begun again, and the bits where paint seeped through under the masking is very nearly rectified. When I actually have some progress of note I'll update here with pics :-D

Got some decals on and started some weathering over the past couple of days. Not sure if I like the weathering around the exhaust stubs; tried to get it to look like a photo I found but it looks a bit heavy handed toward the back. May have to go back and touch it up. Still, this is where we find ourselves today:

Very nice indeed - I think the exhaust staining looks ok actually!

Thanks chaps! I have come round to the exhaust staining, though I think I will like it more with a coat of satin varnish over the top to tone it all down and pull it together. As it stands the kit has got it's ailerons and air intakes on and is in its final stages. Hopefully not long and then I can be onto the next kit, which shall remain a secret for now...

Applied the rest of the decals last night prior to a final weathering. Blooming thing ripped! If you look closely at the red 'do not walk here' decal in the bottom corner you will see a small gap there. Going to have to go back and touch it up with paint. All to do with my heavy handedness - the cartograf decals are sumptious affairs as always. One criticism is that they are not long enough to make it to the wing root if you line them up with where you are told to in the instructions. I think I can live with that though.

I reckon at normal viewing distance you'd get away with that. Or cover it with a bit of scuffed paintwork from pilots flying boots :)
