Paul's Attempts
Re: Paul's Attempts
Decals have been applied. They went on pretty well and no problems with yellowing. They did not react that well with the setting solution I used. They wrinkled up as expected however one star on the tail stayed wrinkled. Can't really see it in the pictures though. They are also a little transparent but minimally so.
A black oil wash. Colour changes quite a bit in natural light.
A little entertainment while letting things dry.
Almost done.

That looks excellent, Paul and it's good to see the decals have behaved themselves.

Very nice Paul - Strangely I've just started an old Hasegawa Yak-3.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...

Great job on the Yak, Paul! The paint job looks flawless as always, and it's good to see the decals performed well. Not a common subject, but that's a very sharp-looking plane. And I hope you enjoyed Blackadder!

Nice paint job. The model makes it apparent how boxy the fuselage is.

Thanks Toby CTobyC wrote:Nice crisp painting.
Yeah Shaun, yellowing did not present a problem luckily.ShaunW wrote:That looks excellent, Paul and it's good to see the decals have behaved themselves.
Sir T, the Hasegawa kit inspired me to do this one. I had the Hasegawa kit a while back and I was in one of those moods where I just put the model together quickly to see what it looked like. No painting at all. I ended up really liking it but I could not find the kit again until Zvezda put this one out. Neat looking aircraft but it is so small. Not even as big as a 109! Good luck on the Yak!Sir T wrote:Very nice Paul - Strangely I've just started an old Hasegawa Yak-3.
Thank you Fred. I have been following your Ar196 and am really impressed with your weathering and hairspray technique. I might try it on my next kit since it looks so good on yours.Canuck2016 wrote:Great job on the Yak, Paul! The paint job looks flawless as always, and it's good to see the decals performed well. I like the flat sides of the fuselage. It gives it a tall look, like the side of the Skyraider.JamesPerrin wrote:Nice paint job. The model makes it apparent how boxy the fuselage is.

Re: Paul's Attempts
Finished the Yak. I broke off the pitot tube that came with the kit(no surprise there). I replaced it with a technique I saw on a modeling video. I used a guitar string and stretched plastic tube over it. Made a nice and strong pitot tube that could be easily painted.
Not all attempts worked though!
I had to drill into the canopy to add the antenna. I tied a knot in the rigging thread to give the glue something substantial to hang onto when it is glued in.
All in all, it was a really fun build that makes a nice Yak-3.
Cheers,

Absolutely bang on Paul; beautiful work!
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Re: Paul's Attempts
An excellent finish Paul and it looks great displayed on that base. Top work
I've never seen the guitar string/plastic idea for pitot tubes before and will bear it in mind as I maintain a small stock of excess string that I've clipped off during re-stringing my 6-string guitar as it can be handy for stuff like tank antennae.

Very nice job on the Yak. The camo pattern looks especially good.
