Re: David's Dithering Desk
What scale is that C-130, David?
I recently built the original Airfix C-130 in the original RAF scheme as you are doing.
That Mustang what-if will be cool.
cheers,
David

Re: David's Dithering Desk
Thanks, David.
The Herc is Revell's. It's listed as 1/144 but actually more like 1/139. The mould dates back eons and was updated back in 1983!!!! I started it in the Cargo Haulers GB here: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=366&t=15102
I finished the F-82 whatif a bit ago and posted it here: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=15477

Re: David's Dithering Desk
Nice one, the Herc is looking great David. The "wings off" approach to painting can be a little risky as it is not always possible to fully judge the quality of the wing/fuselage fit with a dry run, but with certain schemes the method can drastically cut down the complexity of the masking required. I've used the method myself with airliner builds in the past, to make life easier where lengthy fuselage runs of masking tape were required.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: David's Dithering Desk
I finally came up with a way to do a job I've been dreading. The early C-130K scheme included black leading edges partway along the prop blades. I painted the blades silver then masked them and did the yellow tips and the black spinners and blade cuffs but couldn't figure out how to do both sides of those 16 leading edges in a consistent way without TONs of masking.
Then I had a brainwave. I cut a small piece off a dense makeup sponge of my wife's, poured a little Vallejo black primer (because it's nice and matt and it's thin) on a flat surface, , dipped the edge of the sponge in that and then used it like a rubber stamp just on each side of the leading edges.
Not every edge is perfect but I am pretty pleased with the result and it took 15 minutes to do all 16 front and back (after about a month of trying to work out how to avoid masking it all)!

Great workaround! Like the result too!
Best wishes

Re: David's Dithering Desk
I agree fully with the others, that is a neat solution to a vexing issue - masking those prop leading edges would have been a fiddly PITA.

Re: David's Dithering Desk
I had hoped to finish the C-130K and Lightning F2 before shutting down modelling for the summer but it's not to be. I'll get back to them in the Fall.

Re: David's Dithering Desk
Thanks for the concern, David, but all is well. We are en route driving home from Nova Scotia where we spend our summers. Tonight we are stopped in Maine. I expect we will get home by Wednesday if the flooding in the Carolinas doesn't get in our way.
I will be busy for a few days after getting home but I hope to start my modelling season next week.
Did you move yet?
