Re: Ratch's workbench 2017
Looks like good work on the intakes; I remember the seams from my first effort with an Airfix Vulcan!
I've cheated and bought a resin set for the next attempt!

Re: Ratch's workbench 2017
Great work Ratch. The seams in some jet aircraft intakes can be a real bind to tidy up and those of the Vulcan are very prominent - from what I can see you've done a good job of smoothing them out Ratch.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Cheers guys, here's what I've been doing with the B1A
Tyre weights in the nose
Closing up the fuselage
The previous owner had assembled the tail and added a fillet, presumably to fit the smaller original tail cone. As I was to model the B1A rather than the B1, I removed the fillet and cleaned up the facing surfaces.
Similar progress with the B2

Looking good but a brief question. Since they are gear up, why the nose weights? Or did I miss something?

Re: Ratch's workbench 2017
Interestingly, when XH558 was being returned to flight, the radar in the nose was removed (terrain following radar worried the CAA for some reason!) and to counter the loss of up front weight, a slab of steel of the same weight was installed. This was known as 'Red Slab Radar'
Best wishes

XH558 is a possibility, though it's down the pecking order at the momentiggie wrote:Interestingly, when XH558 was being returned to flight, the radar in the nose was removed (terrain following radar worried the CAA for some reason!) and to counter the loss of up front weight, a slab of steel of the same weight was installed. Great progress Ratch - looks like this pair need a fair amount of weight to keep their noses down!

You wuz right - I hadn't noticed that the nose doors are closed up on the B2 So the B1A will be on its wheels and the B2 soaring high aboveRatch wrote:Who said anything about gear upphilp wrote:Looking good but a brief question. Since they are gear up, why the nose weights? Or did I miss something?

The instructions call for 30g but I put 45g in one and 50g in the otherShaunW wrote:looks like this pair need a fair amount of weight to keep their noses down!

Re: Ratch's workbench 2017
I determined that the B1A could be configured with the wheels down and have its airbrakes deployed.
To this end I drilled out the four corners of each of the four panels that form the airbrakes on the upper wings. An Olfa P-Cutter was used to cut out these panels.
The airbrakes were constructed using scrap plastic sheet and rod from my salvage box.
At this point I realised that the Olympus jet exhausts were missing and I would be unable to complete the model, so I bit the bullet and searched Hannants. I found a Flightpath upgrade set. Mart must have bought this and probably still has the B1 tail unit and exhausts, having converted the wings. At £28.25 (inclusive of postage) this was not cheap, but to complete a kit I had given to me was worth it in my opinion. I added the aerial thingies as per the drawings that were in the kit box.
I removed the ECM tail unit in readiness to accept the B1 cone.
Like the B1A, I noticed that the exhausts were missing from the B2 and I had no suitable substitute, so I searched Hannants and found replacements by Flightpath at £9.95 inclusive of postage and decided to invest.
I also added the aerials and stuff.
Now to wait for the postie

Great progress and I like the work with the air brakes using scrap plastic and bits, a man after my own heart Don't forget the underside ones

Would they all be deployed together? I was in two minds about whether to do themShaunW wrote:Don't forget the underside ones
Of course, now I have the upgrade sets there are several things that required action earlier that I didn't know about
The series 201 tail pipes require a chunk to be removed from the moulded wings. I effected this with my Rotary Grinder and superglued the pipes in place. Of course this left huge chasms of gaps that needed filling
The filler shrunk somewhat
and require a second fill & sand session
It was a similar story with the B.1 tail cone
A template is supplied for the positioning of the Vortex Generators
though to me they appear to be at the wrong angle - but what do I know :airhead:
And there is a large fret of PE
