Re: iggie's modelling table
Thanks for the info and link, Iggie. I appreciate it. I've been using something called EZ-line from a US Ebay seller. It works a trick for antenna and some boat rigging (I have the line more appropriate for 1/72 and 1/144 scale). I wonder if it has similar properties to the Shirring? Thanks again.iggie wrote:Thanks folks!
The rigging on the Walrus is 'knitting-in' (or Shirring) elastic; it comes in 200m reels (so good for at least a couple of squadrons ) for £2.50PropWash wrote:NIce work on that MG, Iggie. I also like the progress on the Walrus. What do you use for rigging?
Available from the online auction site (UK): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clear-Shirrin ... SwLVZVs4NG
Anyway, hope that helps!

Re: iggie's modelling table
Just caught up with the Iwo - sorry but I have been distracted and as your strapline says - "time is an illusion"!
That ship is truly impressive - what a whopper! I thought that what I was building was big....but I will not have to build a shelf to put it on! Your patience with all of those tiny parts must have been strained at times. The heli lifting the cargo box was a smart move - very realistic. And all of those life rafts.......
The Wulrus was quick but very effective and I must say very well rigged. I used a similar method for rigging my Airfix 0/400 - I used invisible thread for mine and it nearly drove me bonkers. (Well I know that I am that already, but it made me worse).

I recall a while ago that you mentioned that you were a skin beater, I saw this and thought it might be of interest to you

Re: iggie's modelling table
Thanks PT, Lone Modeller PTB & Ratch
Next up on the bench is the lovely Airfix BAE Hawk, this time in the RAF Benevolent Fund colours from a little while back (I know I have seen this scheme in the flesh as it where, and have photographs too....but can I find them? )
I forgot to really take any progress shots but this was as of last night after a couple of evenings work; a little filler needed at the wing roots and behind the intakes, but other than that I love this kit! I built this once before and made the mistake of using Humbrol spray varnish....which fogged the canopy and wrinkled all the decals
Ha Ha! Those would be about right for me nowadays! Probably wouldn't sound as bad either!Purplethistle wrote:I recall a while ago that you mentioned that you were a skin beater, I saw this and thought it might be of interest to you

Re: iggie's modelling table
Cheers Paddy! Yep, highly recommend this kit, totally blitz-able and I would say a good starter kit for a youngster as there are no too many small parts
I masked up the canopy and nose-wheel assembly (this is added when you close up the fuselage so unavoidable) and gave it a blast with some cheapo car black gloss spray paint that we found in the in-laws car when we sold it recently
Interestingly, rather like my B17 earlier in the year, the flow patterns in the plastic (previously invisible) then appeared! No detectable difference in the surface texture, either before or after painting, and no, they are not thumb-prints ..... That'll teach me to not prime I suppose!
So this is it painted:

And we're done
Airfix RAF Benevolent Fund BAE Hawk T.Mk.1 RAF Valley 2009
Paints: Cheapo gloss Black rattle can plus Humbrol acrylics otherwise
Two coats of W&N Galeria Gloss varnish
And the real thing at Kemble June 2009; what happened to this airshow? It used to be fantastic, well organised and always a delight

Re: iggie's modelling table
Love this one Iggie. I have made a few of these excellent little kits. The 1/48 is a good kit as well. Cracking job mate.
Cheers

Re: iggie's modelling table
That is a great looking Hawk, Iggie. The new tool Hawk was released with little fanfare by Airfix and certainly it looks better when built up than the old stager that I did earlier in the year!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: iggie's modelling table
Cheers Shaun & Ian It certainly helps that the Hawk is a lovely looking aircraft!
I'm back to earth with a bump with the next project:
Another last minute buy from Modelzone when they were closing down...
It's older than me, but not by much!
And progress thus far:

IMHO the Harry Tate is not one of Airfix's finest but you have made a great start to it, Iggie.
