Re: iggie's modelling table

No further news on the B-17, I am considering going for an olive drab topsides (a la Sally B) but using the hairspray method to produce a heavily worn effect to make use of the two coats of metallic which would otherwise be wasted!

On the maritime front, some progress on the USS Montrose has been made; I have removed all the moulded handrailing and replaced (most so far) it with PE railings in 1/400 as no one makes any in 1/375. Once this is complete, all parts will get a spray of canned primer which I'm hoping will satisfactorily double as deck grey
There are one or two bits that need straightening out but otherwise it seems to look ok, and in proportion

I've clearly not been paying attention as I've missed the ship build! Looks good with the PE - railings make all the difference to model ships IMHO and are something sadly missing from my (stalled  ) Ark Royal build.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

That looks really good iggie - Those railings really make a difference!
I really need to have a go at ship building - I've ordered the old airfix guide on it.

Nice idea of trying the hairspray over your silver. Never tried it myself - good luck!

So this is where I have got to with the USS Montrose; the various layers of superstructure are now seated one atop the other and glued into place. The bridge wing ends have been removed from their attached railings and rafts and fixed; the plastic railings will be replaced with (yet more  ) PE and the rafts then fitted later. I may try and fill the gaps between the layers (at porthole levels) but to be honest, the gap only shows in close-up photography so it may be easier to just not take anymore close-ups

Now that really does look good Iggie, no matter how fiddly the PE might be IMHO ship modelling is one area where the effort is worth it. Sometimes with aircraft cockpits and what have you, particularly in 1/72nd, the fiddly PE is not always worth the stress but with a ship, very visible stuff like PE railings, radar scanners and what have you really add to the thing and can prevent the model from looking too toy like.

Thanks guys; USS Montrose continues:
Added the bow, fo'c's'le and stern gun decks, some life rafts (yes I know there are some huge pin marks smack in the middle  ; I'm calling them bungs to stop them sinking :-D ) which will get a set of oars each when (if) I get around to making some, yet more bloomin' railings and the foremast stepped temporarily

Nice one, this is progressing very quickly. I feel I should know this but what scale is it? 1/350th? it looks to be quite a large model.

It's 1/375....so a bit of an oddity! the railings are 1/400, but even so are a little on the large size to my eye :???:
