That would be a build that takes an inordinately long time to complete. Like most of mineMichael modeller 48 wrote:Forgive the question; What is a "turtle" build?

Re: Migrant's Cabin 2017
Not much happening recently in the cabin, partly down to starting a new job, and partly due to one of those periodic spells of inertia/lethargy. I did finish the Mark 1 1/144 Beaufighter though, which was a pretty straightforward build. One thing to correct was the slightly excessive dihedral, fortunately the instructions include a front view drawing which shows the required angle. The only other issue I had with the kit was the lack of positive locations for the undercarriage legs, but overall it was a really nice kit to build in this small scale. Painted with Xtracrylix.
I've put some more finished pics in the Aviation section. If anyone's interested in a full build article it's in the current (Nov 2017) issue of AMW.
Dihedral as kitted.
The difference after cutting and re-positioning the wings isn't drastic, but I think it improves the overall look.

Thanks guys.
Michael, it's the upward angle from horizontal of the wings or tailplane of a fixed-wing aircraft.Forgive my newbie question: What is a dihedral?

Re: Migrant's Cabin 2018
Time for a bit of an update. Since last updating this thread I've finished this 1/72 Hasegawa F-86D. I wanted a quick and easy out-of-box build and this was the perfect candidate.
The S-33 eggplane is finished. Had all kinds of problems trying to make the decals conform to the fuselage curves, but it wasn't a 'serious' project so I didn't loseany much sleep over it.
Made more progress on the 1/72 Hasegawa Viking too. For a 70s kit the fit of parts has been amazing. Here it is part way through the decalling stages.

Nice as always Mike. The S3 Viking looking sweet.

Stunning as always, I always love your builds as they look so professional and inspirational.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Flawless modelling as always, Mike and always a pleasure to look at. In among all the serious stuff, I have to say that is one of the best builds of a Hasegawa Egg Plane that I've ever seen - in fact I've seen builds of "proper" Su-33 Flankers that don't look anywhere near as good
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

I forget if I've asked before but do you use a primer. I find one necessary for acrylics but get the surface smooth enough is hit and miss as sanding/polishing back is a chore on complex, shapes with surface detail.

Thanks for the nice comments.
I do James; I also use acrylics, and find a primer necessary for durability. I use Tamiya White Surface Primer, decanted from the rattle can. It seems to dry very smoothly, almost as if it shrinks while it's drying.I forget if I've asked before but do you use a primer. Re: Migrant's Cabin 2018
I like your Viking a great deal!
What is your formula for washes? They look very smooth. I sometimes get washes drying in such a way that they look coarse. I think the paint particles come out of the solution and bunch up. Maybe I'm using the wrong medium (artists oils and Mona Lisa thinner).

Re: Migrant's Cabin 2018
Thanks! I don't actually do an overall wash, just a pin-wash applied to the panel lines. I've tried overall washes/filters on armour though, and run into the same issues you mentioned; I have wondered whether I should be applying the wash over a flat surface rather than gloss/semi-gloss. It would be good to know what others do.Softscience wrote:I like your Viking a great deal!
