Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Luckily, i do requests
Originally painted in dayglo red, the Katanganese Magisters seem to have all faded to a pale orange by the time they were delivered (from who knows where). I decided to go for this with a quick spray of Halford's white and a few coats of thinned Vallejo orange over the appropriate areas. This will then be masked off and sprayed aluminium overall.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Now shiny!
Also worth noting - added gun pods which the original carried, making a proper nuisance of itself against the advancing UN troops. These came courtesy of Old Tonto (Cheers mate) and I think are off a Bf109.
Time for decals, and sorry for the blurry camerawork. Still getting the hang of this mobile phone photography.

Moving back to English, just a quick note to say that the Canberra and the Magister will both be showing up on Aviation Modelling some time today.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
New project started - the MiG-23BN, the ground attack Flogger used by everyone instead of the MiG-27. I'm trying to kitbash two old Academy kits (the MiG-23 and 27) into this widely used but little-kitted fighter-bomber.
Starting with - The Nose.
As I soon found out, this is the old Hasegawa moulding with a few small changes to divert Hasegawa's lawyers. As such ,it goes together fairly easily, but unfortunately is a bit deficient in cockpit detail. I filled this in with a Pavla ejector seat and control panel, which although they look good, don't allow enough room to put a control column in! I'm going to use the excuse that with the canopy down you can't see much in there anyway, but I have to say the thought does nag a bit...

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
I remember building the Hase MiG-23 some time ago and I kept cockpit detail to a Neomega replacement seat and a scratched up instrument panel IIRC - you are right though, there isn't much of the cockpit interior that can be seen, particularly if the canopy is modelled closed.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Last night I thought 'I'll add the nose cone and call it a night'. Two hours later:
Being aHasegawa Academy kit, it just fell together and I did rather more than I intended to. Kudos to this 29-year-old kit (and the rest if you count the original Hasegawa ) for being so well behaved. As you can see, from these two it is extremely easy to kitbash a BN together - the only poor fit was fin to fuselage which called for a minor rebate to be cut into the lower edge of the fin as the Mig-27 is more flat backed than its older brother and a very small amount of filler adding.
Don't know what I'll get done tonight but I expect progress by tomorrow.

Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Not a lot of progress:
And that doesn't show up very well in the photo. The lower fin is on but the bulk of the time was spent trying to blend in the air intakes in, the fit on which is best described as 'approximate'. More to come soon.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
A productive day:
Filled, sanded, undercoated and the top camouflage colours applied. Nothing to report in terms of difficulty of process; it all went surprisingly, worryingly well. If anything could be said, I need a better airbrush - the one off Ebay isn't really up to it, and most of the kit was brush painted as a result.
The camouflage top colours have to go on yet - massive scope for disaster!

Excellent surgery Rob. I can pick your brains when I do the same conversion for my East German collection. Looking forward to seeing this one complete. Not many Ethiopian subjects about.
