I love that scheme too. I think I have it somewhere on an old Esci sheet so if your Carpena decals explode I'll see if I can find them.

How is the Sabre build going?

Excellent, Ian - it tends to be more Colorado decals, who bought out Carpena when the man himself retired, that have the shattering problem, but it's nice to have some backup.

Looks good.

Don't think I ever said that about a hobby craft kit before :)

Just a quick update on the Skyraider as I haven't posted for a couple of days:

Image

This wasn't the easiest kit to decal as Carpena decals can get a bit brittle in their old age, and the sash particularly was made for a lot fatter aircraft than the Hobby Craft A-1H. Luckily I was able to splice some strips of international orange from another Carpena sheet on to the sash to plug the gaps. Otherwise, so far, there haven't been any big problems.

Not a lot else to do - the next 48 hours will probably see this one finished.

No matter what scheme it's in, it's still a brute of an aircraft! Looking good though and well done for persevering with the decals
Best wishes

I've been neglecting the workbench lately, so here is some of my latest work:

Image

This is the start of a new project, a history of Normandie-Niemen Squadron, starting with the Heller Yak-3. Not a bad kit for its time, although obviously greatly excelled by the later Eduard kitting which was just a bit too expensive for me. The kit is pretty well straight out of the box except for rescribing of the raised panel lines and the addition of Tamiya tape harnesses.
The fit of this one is a bit approximate and needed touches of filler here and there, especially at the fuselage/wing joint, but otherwise it isn't too bad.

Hard at work on the Yak-3:

The air intake is on now;

and I've added a radio set behind the pilot's seat and the distinctive 'yoke' for the gunsight as well as the sight itself, all made from scrap sprue. This leaves the kit almost ready for painting as soon as the canopy is masked and attached.

What kind of pen do you use for pre-shading?
I used a spirit based permanent maker once, which worked brilliantly..... until I sprayed varnish over the paint, at which point the pen bled through almost as though I'd put it on top of the paint rather than underneath.....
Best wishes

Not a pen, just thinned down black acrylic paint applied with a brush. I was going to use an art pen, but I heard of other people who had the same experiences as GmG. I'm reading around for alternatives though.

Ah, ok! It looked very neat so I assumed it was a wide marker or similar! For some reason, I thought applying pre-shading with a brush would look odd....yet I tried a marker! I will try your idea next chance I get!

The Yak-3 is complete and on Aviation Modelling, coming up next is an S.N.900 (French built Focke-Wulf 190 to you and me :) ) by MGD Models, which I understand is the old Admiral kit from the early 2000s.

Time for a new kit - in this case the SN.900 (more or less a FW-190A-5/6), kit by MGD although it seems it is a repop of an earlier kit by Admiral.

Image

A fairly typical Czech garage kit - good resin, nice vacform, smart decals, excellent brass fret, horrible plastic. So far what little I have done of it has gone together well, but I'm anticipating a lot of clean-up to come.

Interesting that this rather dangerous aircraft was used to supplement the Yak-3s as they ran out of spare parts in the immediate postwar history of the Normandie-Niemen Squadron. Apparently they were only put into production because the French had found the Western Front FW-190 repair depot and (elsewhere) a stock of BMW801 engines. As the originals had been built largely by slave labour and many of the parts were sabotaged, this was not a well-behaved aircraft nor popular to fly. Also odd to think of two old adversaries flying in the same squadron.
