Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Well, the Flogger is now complete and up on Aviation Modelling.
Next into the pit is this blast from the past, an Airfix Cessna O-1 Bird Dog. As you can see, I've made a start on this tiny kit, cutting out the pilot's door and replacing it with a resin bit from the excellent Pavla detailling set. As this one is 90% greenhouse, a detailed interior is quite important.

This will be good. Was not aware that Pavla made a set for the O-1.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale
Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Cool little aircraft. I have always been daunted by this type of plane as the windscreen and windows are so hard to fit. It will be neat seeing the detailing.

Looking forward to you beating up on that Bird Dog. Lancfan's is very good also.

The Pavla set comes with windscreen and rear window in vacform. Not that this will make it any easier to fit, it just means I have optionsPGAS wrote:Cool little aircraft. Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Got a little bit of work done on the O-1 interior:
It surprised me a lot by going together very nicely and not giving me any trouble (so far). Quick coat of Vallejo Sky Grey, picked out details in appropriate colours, gave it a wash in Army Painter Dark Tone wash to bring out details and a very light drybrush in pale grey to highlight.
Next part is the seats, which are quite highly detailed and might present more of a challenge.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Fuselage is all put together:
Now on to the difficult bit - getting the super thick transparencies (ha!) into their spaces. Why did I bother painting the interior? It's going to look like Salvador Dali painted it once these go on.
I experimented with the inaptly named Microsol Kristal Klear, which is anything but, before deciding that it just would not do. It refused to keep surface tension over the hole it was painted over and popped like a rather weedy soap bubble before it was anywhere near set. Anybody got any tips for using this sort of instant windows stuff?

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Coming along nicely:
In the end, I decided to go with the kit transparencies as the fit of the vacform Pavla replacements was too poor, and white glue just didn't hold them sufficiently in place. If anyone is building an O-1 and wants them, please PM me. Other than that, everything went together very smoothly.
Getting towards masking and painting time, I think.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Now masked and undercoated:
A difficult one to mask, btw - lots of glass and some of it quite fiddly to get at. When it's dry I'll start the painting, a light grey all over scheme not to different from the undercoat itself. Or the plastic the kit came in, for that matter.

Re: Spaceowl's Roost
Here is the almost completed landing wheel-less Bird Dog, a sad victim of the carpet monster.
EDIT:
Found a pair of wheels off an A Model Mil-1 of all things, which make a pretty good match. Photos of the completed beast tomorrow.
