Re: Spaceowl's Roost

My mistake; next out of the traps is going to be this ex-Soviet re-shot of the Frog B(I)8 Canberra. I first made it in 2009 and it's sat on my shelf getting dustier and shabbier until a few days ago I decided to pull it apart, fix what was wrong with it and put it back together. It will eventually be finished as one of the no.5 'Tuskers' Squadron aircraft that operated out of the Congo in 1961-64.

I haven't had a mobile for the last couple of days, hence the lack of de-build/re-build photos, but if you know the Frog Canberra there wouldn't have been any surprises. The main diffence is the rescribing of panel lines (must get more Dyno tape - when I think of the boxes full I threw out when I worked for BT...)

While I haven't been updating as i should, I have been busy - here's the Canberra, rescribed, resprayed and decalled:

On top of that, I've made a start on the old Heller Fouga Magister I mentioned a few posts back.

It looks like it's going to be a speedy build - pretty much out of the box so far, and I'm struck by what high quality kits Heller produced compared with contemporary British ones. Pardon the heresy.
Only added Tamiya tape harnesses and parachute packs made out of sculpted wood filler. Currently going blind and mad trying to mask the many windows of the greenhouse.

Nice progress Rob. Canberra looks much improved with re-scribed panel lines.

Magister office area looks very snazzy too. Wood filler parachute packs - that's thinking outside the box.

Nice work. That Magister is shaping up nicely. A local fella is selling a FROG Canberra I was thinking of taking off of their hands. Should I reconsider?

By no means! The FROG B(I)8 is a nice kit (looks like a Canberra, goes together well for a kit from the mid-60s). The ex-USSR re-shot of the Canberra is one to avoid though, the plastic is as hard as stone and bright yellow to boot.

Lots of options for this model of Canberra beyond the obvious RAF and IAF - South Africa, Peru and Venezuela spring to mind.

Looks like I spoke too soon; they've either been bought up or pulled. I think they were NOVO repops anyway. I have a handful of those and they are half kit and half flash.

Yes, blame Wilson's government for that. He was like Carter only more corrupt. (WARNING _ THIS OPINION WAS GENERATED WHILE DRUNK). :)

Like Atlee and Cripps' very ill conceived idea to send them Rolls Royce jet engines, but slightly less catastrophic.

The Magister is coming along nicely:

Image

The fit is a little poor - too many butt joints and perhaps a little bit of wear on the molds after all these years. I needed to use a small amount of filler on the nose, and quite a lot of sanding around the air intakes. The canopy was masked after a bit of a fight and will be going on sometime today.

In all I'm enjoying this one. Heller made a good kit in their day.

The Magister's looking good, Spaceowl. I built one of these for a Blitzbau some years ago and really enjoyed it. Which markings will it be finished in?

Katangese Air Force, Mike. Briefly the most feared aircraft in Sub-Saharan Africa!
