Lancfan's Spitfire Vb "Flash Blitz"

Post by lancfan »

well, my weekend is again largely free so I have decided to blitz build another preserved Spitfire.
This model will be based on Spitfire F.5b BL614 currently displayed at RAFM Hendon but many years ago she was displayed at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry where I was fortunate enough to be allowed to sit in her.
As this build is an on the spur decision I will call this a "Flash Blitz"- starting now!
Here are the boxtop and sprue shots, the first progress pictures TF soon.

Best wishes

Cheers iggie, the wing has been cemented together, the stand locating slot was short shot so this was filled and the brackets for the kit cockpit floor have been cut away and the sidewalls have been sanded smooth.

This is so cool. “Flash Blitz”. Like that concept also.

I will be watching.

The sidewall details were largely painted on as the kit canopy isn't exactly free of distortion, the main details were added using AZ Spitfire spare parts, pictures show the assembled cockpit glued to the wing and the assembled fuselage halves both waiting for the glue to dry.

I was inspired by your last blitz build that a bought a new tooling Airfix Spit. I think it is Mk1a for a Battle of Britain theme.

Good luck, with the "Flash Blitz", can you explain what that is? You build without post times and just build until you are finished?

Coming together nicely, looking forward to checking your progress in between me watch the Calgary Stamper CFL football game today.

Michael, I decided to build this on the spur of the moment and took the name from "Flash Mob" which is an impromptu public group dance or theatre performance.

The cockpit is now complete and the wing is ready to be joined to the fuselage, the fuel tank has been emphasised by a coat of paint to lift it proud of the fuselage, when this has dried I will attach the two assemblies together, I have not included an harness to the pilots' seat as I do not remember seeing one fitted to the airframe at Manchester years ago but there was some form of cushion- today she has been properly restored for permanent display whereas then she was more gate guard than museum exhibit.

Seven hours into the build and it looks like an aeroplane, with the wing now attached the model will be left for a little while to let the glue harden enough to continue.

A Gate Guard is an historic or retired aeroplane placed on static display at the entrance to an airport or airbase Michael.

Oh, I see, Calgary has an aerospace museum, with a few planes on gate guard display outside of the museum hangar which I have visited a few time.

Great choice of kit David. Theis kit has to be my all time favourite Spitfire model. Odly enough though I hsve never completed one in the box top scheme.
Am following your build for sure.

All the best.

I prefer this kit Greg (and the similar mark 1a) to the NT early Spitfires- I always keep some in stock.
