Re: Shaun's 2018 Bodging Bench
That looks very sharp indeed Shaun. I've always liked North African Theatre colour schemes from both sides and yours is exceptionally good. I was wondering what you used for masking the theatre band. Is it just Tamiya tape or do you edge it with vinyl tape? I've been using vinyl tape for a little while now and it cuts down on paint bleed quite a lot.

Re: Shaun's 2018 Bodging Bench
Many thanks for your continued interest and kind comments folks.
I used Model Craft 2mm tape to mask the outer edges and filled the inner in with Tamiya tape, Darryl. The Model Craft tape is made by Shesto Ltd in Watford according to the packet and I've found it to be excellent, being low tack and preventing most bleed through, the worst I've had has been a tiny amount. Certainly I've found it to be equal to Tamiya tape and might even be a bit better as I've had worse bleed through with the latter products. IIRC my pack came free with Scale Aircraft Modelling International mag a few years ago. In appearance it is similar to Tamiya's product and is on an 18 metre roll which, as I tend to use it sparingly, will probably last me a while before I have to track down some more. HTH.

I can barely see a 1/72nd scale Me 109, let alone mottle one - you must have mistaken me for a proper modeller or something

Re: Shaun's 2018 Bodging Bench
+1 from me on that one, Stuart. I find mottling with an airbrush to be a difficult technique to master and I'm very much hit and miss with it. I've yet to see a truly convincing mottle done with a paintbrush, certainly it's beyond my meagre brush painting capabilities and that lack of ability and patience to practice it is one of the reasons I switched to using an airbrush over 20 years ago (someone will now post a pic of a beautifully mottled 1/72nd '109 achieved using only a third hand paintbrush and 30 year old paint ). Mottling the 1/72nd scale fuselage of a Luftwaffe single-seat fighter is hard, hard, hard, in my opinion as there is next to no working room. I've tried mottling in 1/72nd before without any great success but I will have another go at some point. The problem I find is that I don't build WW II Luftwaffe types regularly enough to really become anywhere near good at the technique - post war jets are my main field of interest although I do like to build prop aircraft from time to time. The effect I've managed here was more luck than judgement and I've also ballsed it up in the past - I recall re-painting one model three times before I was sort of happy, in the end it wasn't all that brilliant but I'd had enough and just wanted to get the model finished and move on!Stuart wrote:hats off to anyone that can mottle in 1/72, I've made a complete balls up of my 1st attempt.ShaunW wrote:Cheers, Shane.shangos70 wrote:Certainly is a cracker Shaun, I challenge you to recreate it on the the 1/72 version now!

Wow! This certainly took a giant leap forward Shaun.
Your mottling work is outstanding and as someone else mentioned, the decals really bring it to life.
First class.

Re: Shaun's 2018 Bodging Bench
Thanks chaps! I've applied all of the decals now but there's an issue with the upper right wing cross in that it's creased after application of Microscale red bottle setting solution - all of the other decals are fine - so I'm going to have to sort that out. There's going to be a bit of a delay as I'm busy at the weekend and most of next week.

Just catching up on things myself after a hectic few days among activities that are non-modelling. The painting came out well, that you posted a few days back, and hope you can resolve the decal debacle.

Cheers, Chris. I hope the decal isn't going to be too much of an issue. Typically it had to be one of the markings that is most visible!chrism wrote:Just catching up on things myself after a hectic few days among activities that are non-modelling. Re: Shaun's 2018 Bodging Bench
Cheers, Ken.
After a week away skiing I've now resumed work on the Emil. Today was clear coat day and I applied Humbrol matt coat, thinned with white spirits, by airbrush as per my usual practice. I did what I could with the decals and, for the most part they are OK, but one or two are not perfect. This is the first time that I can ever recall having any problems with Tamiya decals/Microscale setting solutions but hey ho there you go and there are some small creases here and there but nothing that totally spoils the model. I daren't continue to add more fluids in an attempt to iron out the troublesome decals as I feel to do so would have made the situation worse. The swastikas with the white backgrounds look a little odd but I've checked out wartime colour photos of the actual aircraft and they are correct.
Anyhoo here she is with the final varnish coat on:
The model will now be left for 24 to 48 hours before I handle it. I've already started detail painting parts such as the wheels, undercarriage struts, prop and what have you whilst they remain on the sprues.
Thanks for looking.

Great work Shaun, excellent
All models are equal. Some models are more equal than others.
