All done, I'll now post one or two more pics and a write up in the aviation section. Many thanks to all who have followed this build and given kind words and encouragement along the way.

Next up will be a bit of armour modelling!

I am keen to see what you add and "do" with the crusader. Hoping you will try and remove the dodgy paint job I put on it and get a few parts unassembled and put together properly. The tracks in know will benefit from a better approach over mine.

I'll take a look this afternoon, Chris. We all have our own methods of construction and I will possibly alter bits here and there but I haven't examined the kit in any great detail yet.

Nicely turned out Messerschmitt Shaun, looking forward to seeing what you do with the Crusader as I’ll be starting one of those myself fairly shortly.

Many thanks, Steve. As you can see from the above posts, the Crusader was kindly given to me by Chris and is part started so to begin with I'll be taking a look at what, if any, of her work I will undo to suit my own style of construction. It's a kit I've wanted to do for ages but never got round to it.

It is a nice kit in my eyes, I have saved one in the past but this time I’ll be building one un-started.

Nice job Shaun. The paintwork is stunning. 8-)

Thanks, Daz, you're very kind.

And so we're off with the Crusader. It's been a while since an AFV graced my workbench. Here's the hull:

Image

Image

First job was clipping off the tracks. Unfortunately track tension has bent the rear sprocket and front idler wheels out of alignment on both sides and I will have to realign and glue those wheels before the tracks are refitted. With tanks of this nature that feature deep side skirts I quite often don't use the full run of tracks in order to avoid any tension damage issues. At the end of the day, the upper run of track cannot be seen unless the model is inverted and I will therefore ultimately reattach these tracks without there being a full run.

The other issue that I am in the process of addressing is on the turret where I am replacing the open turret hatches with the one piece closed version that comes with the kit:

Image

I almost never build tanks with the hatches open as I don't fit crew figures - my figure painting is nowhere good enough. The one piece hatch needs a bit more fettling and what have you but I'll get it to fit OK. Other than that, I'll flat off the initial paintwork and fit a few more parts, possibly with some scratch built replacements or additions, before starting some painting.

Thanks for looking.

Wow that 109 really looks good. Top notch painting there - really one to be proud of. If this crusader is anything like as good it will be top notch too.

I have been somewhat occupied in the frustrating pastime of "unpacking boxes" this weekend.... whereupon I found the old Airfix book I have on doing things with this Crusader... (amongst the contents is a large section on creating a full interior and leaving the top so you can lift it and see in ... there are pages and pages on other stuff too. So do ask if there is anything you want info on
(I do still have another box of this old kit yet to be opened)

I've always liked the crusader. I remember building this kit sometime in the 70s. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

This Crusader looks fun to watch, what scale is it 1/32 or 35th ?

And that way I can blame you when one arrives :ha:

It was (well it still is) the airfix one in their unique scale of 1/32.

As history to this build... bought one of the kit .. Then got given a secondfor Christmas 2016... Started building one in 2017 - and lost interest in it - plus hadn't got access to the modelling guide book for it as that was packed away.... So I offered this part built one to Shaun as I knew it was a kit that he had drooled over in times of old and never had his hands on I handed it over to him in state younow see last November .. And so here begins the journey.. So sit back and watch his magic unfold ..

ps:. bizarely as it happens a weekend of dealing with boxes etc has befell me.. and this book reappeared today...
