Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
Interesting source of light lenses there, Crash! How did the modelling night go? I think it would be interesting to see some pics if you got round to taking any.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.
Work is the curse of the modelling classes!

I found this advice about "rhinestones" (thats what I typed in to find them) on another forum - maybe britmodeller?ShaunW wrote:Interesting source of light lenses there, Crash! How did the modelling night go? I think it would be interesting to see some pics if you got round to taking any.
By one Ratch - maybe the same Ratch, like, on this forum, here?
Have to hurry up now, to pick a train to the modelling tonight.
Waiting for the day, when wars for territory will be something to be read about in history books only.

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
Not so much happening on my workbench, the past 5 weeks. here´s a blurry pic of the rhinestone landing light, in that P-40 wing:
...and I made a start on a Frog Spit Mk VIII. A kit that fascinated me, but the bulged looking wings always put me off, to have a start on her! Now I found a not-too much fussy way, of making the wings thinner, w/o having to sand down the wing, and engrave it all over again!
did some little things bout the cockpit, but the thick glass part (which I made look hazy, by trying to "polish" with Aqua color mix .......
makes it rather futile work!
Well, some alcohol will make the canopy more transparent, again, I hope.
...and there´s still something lurking on me:
(What have I gotten into? )
---> I´ll build that "kit" like a toy, not like a model! I´m not crazy enough, to try make it look like a P-51!
But, hey, it actually looks more like a P-51, than it´s sister "puzzle", the Grafix Spritefire, looks a Spitfire.

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
Finally found some time for glueing things:
Made an intake trunk from a cut up drop tank (not so good to see on the pic):
It´s the ancient Hasegawa F-86F-40, that originates from 1966 (source: scalemates).
That must have been one of Hase´s first kits, right?
Who needs the luxury of wheel wells, when you can show their shape by raised panel lines:
so this is goin to be wheels up! Not in the mood to construct wheel wells right now LOL!
PS: took me only half an hour to drill holes and glue some rhinestone landing lights, so this is an
easy, quick way to make old kits look better, than they really are

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
By now, this is quite an obscure kit - my search on the net for reviews didn´t bring up anything! except pics of a built up one, that had been re-worked heavily with engraved panel lines, cockpit detail, air brake details....
Maybe I should write a review bout this kit, to warn people?
Haven´t checked references, shapewise it´s not bad, but it´s by far the most primitive Hase kit I´ve ever seen!
Wings glued on by now, biggest motivation for this build is my curiosity for using some nice decals of a JASDF plane.
I find the idea of putting Hinomarus on a Sabre very attractive

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
At least I found a small review in paper about this kit, in a 39 years old modellers magazine.
Even in 1979, the reviewer found it obsolete already!
I don´t know the kit reviewers of this mag to be overly critical (it´s PAM, "Plastic Aircraft Models"), but hey,
take a look at this snap of the sprues:
I doubt anyone wants me to describe the kit a little more???
For me, as I´m quite a nerd for old kits, it´s "interesting" ,
but everybody else: STAY AWAY, BEWARE!
I got it as bargain, but I would be mad now, if someone would´ve ripped me off with this one!
Hasegawa did the last edition of it in 1994, so it´s quite possible that there are people out there,
who use the "obscurity" of this kit, to sell it at outrageous prices!!!

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
I find this personally interesting, as I have the 1972 boxing of this Sabre kit with the decals correct to the box and instruction sheet. Back in '72', I would have been excited to build it as a Canadair Mk.6; at least the wing would have been correct.
Today, I keep it around waiting for the grandkids to want to build it. Or if they don't, maybe I'll still build the nostalgic Mk.6.

I guess it will go to eebee

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
Before I make the pilot sit into the cockpit, I sand down the canopy coaming in front of the windscreen,
was really looking cumbersome, with a too high angle:
Maaan, look at that "armour" around the MG muzzles, fixed with big, ugly rivets (before I sanded, it stood proud of
the fuselage even more )

Closing holes in the fuselage (that´s where you were supposed to glue the gear doors in ) with plastic rod:

Good to see you back here and it's fascinating to watch such an old Hasegawa being built.

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
I so enjoy your builds and this one is no exception, Crash.
The play-by-play is a treat and it looks like you're successfully overcoming each and every challenge this venerable kit throws at you.

Man, that Sabre looks like it is going to put up a fight but you are doing a very nice job.

Thanks for your kind words!
Since I´m REALLY lagging behind in finishing my exam, I hardly find bench time right now...
Oh, why must real life be so ....real?!

Re: Crashpilot´s Crash Site
Now I´ll continue my bench thread: at first, my ex-broken arm made me lose a lot of time, but now, I actually "won" a few free days off, because of my accident: I did get some extra time more, to finish my exam.
To make the best of these few precious free days, I prefer to go on with half-finished models, before starting a kit from new:
So it will be another P-51, that -hopefully- will get over the finish this week (pics to follow)
