The patchy camo looks cool. Its a look I try to achieve. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It worked great on your firebrand. I hope your clear-coats don't diminish the effect.

What's in store for the heavy weathering?

The only issue at the moment is that the EDSG looks better than the Slate Grey that way put down as a solid coat to cover the primer. Something to keep in mind for next time.

After a coat of Tamiya Gloss Clear I spent half an hour working on the exhausts. I used Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron and Exhaust manifold as a base and then tinted with clear orange and smoke to try and get something like what can be seen in this classic photo

https://elpoderdelasgalaxias.files.word ... ek6192.jpg;

That went pretty well, unfortunately the tape took a large patch of paint off the nose! I had used "used" tape to do most of the masking but ran out and used some fresh tape over this area. Also I believe the smooth gloss finish meant the tape gripped a lot more than it would over bare paint. I've rarely had problems with paint lifting before even with fresh tape.

I've realised that the scheme I wish to do uses WWII style font so will need to get some WWI white lettering decals before I can move on to weathering. Underside black codes will be traced using a drawing program (Inkscape) and printed onto clear decal paper.

James

I'm sorry to see your masking lifted some paint but, as this has happened to me recently too, I look forward to seeing how you repair it. I botched my last one and need some lessons on it.

I attempted to rub down the edges of the paint, though evidently not enough as the patch's edges on the nose is still quite apparent. I then just resprayed the final colour directly, no primer etc.

I then cracked on and applied the national markings from Xtradecal generic sheets, while I sourced/printed the codes. I had initially intended to use cut up decals to applied the noticeable yellow dashes on the tail and wing tips, but decided against as getting them to line up would be a nightmare so instead I've spent this evening masking the little buggers. Paper was used to block the tape from the markings already applied. Too tired tonight to start spraying so the will have to wait for to see it's successful. :???:

Good on you, James, show that Firebrand who's boss!
Nice tip on protecting decals from more masking, thanks.

The Firebrand is coming along really well James and I like your method of protecting decals from tape. I wish I'd thought of that when I built my Backfire.

Some amazing work on this Firebrand. I lift paint from time to time too, mostly when impatient with masking. Sanding all around is usually the only thing that works for me. I can't wait for your Firebrand's next stage in build.

Thanks for the comments, I didn't realise blocking the masking tape was such a radical idea ;-) So a light coat of white first before the yellow and then viola! OK so it's bit chunky and the widths are slightly uneven, but job done.

Nice one James. Looking about as good as a Firebrand could. :)

Your Firebrand is looking really smart; I have one from Valom in the stash but I'd not seen the Magna kit before
Best wishes
