Re: James' "Shed"

Cheers guys, the base is a bit chunky and could do with being tad slimmer but I had a 15min window to get something knocked up.

After a light coat of Xtraxylix Flat with a bit of Gloss in it (which by the way does thin with IPA very nicely) weathering was applied using oils to add streaks around the engine covers and underneath mainly around the centre section, following photos that I had in my references. Exhaust stains were Tamiya Smoke sprayed on.

My backwards sequencing of jobs came back to bite me as the cockpit on unmasking didn't just have a couple of dust sprites but was chock full of resin shaving from drilling the hole for the support. As the the windscreen has had quite a bit a fairing in I elected somewhat rashly to slice through the canopy so only that needed to be removed.

Once the debris was shovelled out and the canopy given a clean it was re-glued with PVA. Of course there was yet more painting to do as closer study revealed that there were black anti-slip wing walk areas though not immediately apparent. Once that was done (after making a hash of mixing a small drop of white into the black and obtaining light grey) hook and torpedo were added. So here's a final preview, the prop blur is temporary as the Firebrand had a big 13'3" propeller and the ones I had printed are 12'. My detail added to the nose of the torpedo means it just grazes the disk

Looks fantastic, James. Good job on the exhaust stains (and the canopy cleaning).

So after spending my time lounging around in the Matchbox group build it's time to return here to update you on proceeding with my IWNGTBF (It Was Never Going To Be Finished) Surtees TS16/03.

http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=365&t=15043; I've not been idle either since the end of play but I've been working on painting the body work. Since the upper part has required three colours all of which needed at least two coats it has take quite a few sessions to get this far. This has also been complicated as I decided with missing the completion date that I might as well do a better job and replace the rather off white decals which would have stood out against with clear ones. As mentioned though I had traces of bleed through from a red marker that I had used even on parts it was used on! One of the side pods now required stripping and repainting.

Image

I had used a digital tracing of the white arrow decal for the nose to help workout the position of the masking, in doing this it was clear that the decal would have been too small and got the shape slightly wrong; the blunt nose should be the same width as the body of the arrow.

I've spent a good 3-4 hours working carefully and replicating a lot of the decals. Initially it was going to be just those which had the white base on the decals sheet that didn't match my whiter paint work, these were converted to be black on clear. I had spent 20mins tracing the Surtees logo and then found a nice hi res image online! I then found original logos for Bang & Olufsen and started playing with them eventually working out how to replicate the text rewritten in a ring. Some car dials I had made for another project were reprinted though they've not come out very clear. Finally I found a vector version of the Matchbox logo but though this matches the real logos they are much chunkier that the one used on the car and the letters just run together at this scale, I'll be using the kit decals instead. I've printed on both clear and white decal paper. Note printing from the bottom of a sheet of A4 and working up means I can use the same sheet of decal paper multiple time.

Well after babes and Stormtroopers have been dealt with it is time to return to the Surtees.

I had gotten as far as improving the windscreen which is the main week point of the kit. For some reason a large location lip is mould into the front edge of the cockpit and a corresponding large step in thickish clear part. This is completely unnecessary as a butt join would have sufficed and the clear part is badly marred.

Image

My initial thought was to replace the clear part in acetate sheet and took a masking tape template of the screen shape. In the end though a thought I'd chance my hand and sand down the inside of the kit part, if it broke back to plan A. Anyway I got away with it, just there a couple of stress marks. The dumb thing was that I hadn't removed the ridge before painting. So cue a lot of faffing about spaying the inside and touching up the outside. Unfortunately the body got left with masking tape on on the window sill for a couple of weeks and despite the tape being heavily de-tacked it marred my lovely gloss finish. Some of this has been mediated by polishing but I hope the clear coat will sort it out.

Image

The last couple of nights I've got on with decalling. I've only use the kit decals on the sides of the wings and around the cockpit, all the nose ones are mine. For the white FINA logo though I pre-scored around the kit decal letters and oversprayed white because I had seen how translucent the white was on other builds. What I have forgotten was to create the Goodyear logos for the airscoop - the instructions have avoided using the brand name and used another sponsor. They should say Firestone but as mentioned above the kit's tires have Goodyear moulded on them and I should keep the error consistent. There are some tiny Goodyear decals for the front edge of the body where also it should say Firestone.
