The New Softscience labs

Post by Softscience »

This thread will be a continuation of the nefarious activities first seen on the old UAMF page HERE :-D

I'll kick off activities in the shiny fancy new room, with a shiny fancy new kit

Image

This will be my first biplane model, and I'm building it in anticipation of purchasing and building some of those fine fine fine looking Wingnuts Wings biplanes.

This little Avia is a good looking kit too, with a lot of nice little details like the Dunlop name visible on the tires (tyres to most of you).

Image

And petite, crisply moulded parts throughout

Image

As this is my first Biplane, I hope those of you who are already expert in the art of rigging and aligning wings will be able to help me out along the way.

So without further ado: Fetch me the brains Igor!

Even better; I picked it up used from a Seattle hobby shop. $15! Awesome!

Ralph, just wanted to say that the Mig-15 (photos on the old site) is looking very nice indeed.

This Avia seems a nice kit. Why do they call them "weekend editions"?

The weekend editions are marketed as more basic versions of Eduard kits. They include only one set of markings, and do not have the photo-etch, vinyl masks, and other goodies that typically come with Eduard kits.

PS. Did the Bishop make it in yet?

Well I hope I don't disappoint then.

I did some work on the cockpit, which is simple but well detailed. For example, you can just barely see a flare pistol behind the seat. There is also a map case, but its not visible once the seat goes in. The lap belts are from a Classic Airframes kit. I'm also using the shoulder harness, but thats going to come in later with the top fuselage.

Work also continues on the Mig-17. I have finish fairing in the horizontal stabilizors and repaired the lost panel lines. So far, every joint on this kit has required at least some filling and sanding. I'm concerned about the state the surface will be in once it comes time to paint. Things may be a bit too rough for a natural metal finish. I'll do what I can to get everything smoothed out.

Nice work on the cockpit. Is the seat cushion part of the kit or something you created? Nice touch either way. ;-)

No sign of it as yet, I'm afraid. When did you post it? Two-three weeks is typical delivery time from the US to Australia these days.

I put together the Avia fuselage, and there is some serious stepping in the area of fabric effect. I'll have to figure something out before I post more shots.

Meanwhile, Mig madness continues.

I spent a good chunk of time on the -17's drop tanks, one of which was missing its pylon thingies, and both of which fit very very poorly. Tomorrow I'll mask the canopy hood and spray on a coat of primer to see where more attention is needed. I got good Tamiya primer this time, so I should be ok.

The Airfix Mig-15 is almost finished, just a few antennae and radio wires. And I need to get a flat coat on those wheels. I gave them a brown filter wash today and it dried very glossy for some reason.
