Hi Guys, I’m glad you liked the bird dog, I’m going to have a go at making a base for it.

Tonight I got the primer and a first coat of yellow on the DFS 194, I quite like it in yellow.

Dirk I think it’s toooooooo yellow I think I might tone it down to more like a cream colour.

Here is my cunning plan for a base, I found a sheet of polystyrene that had a bubble like texture I thought if I painted it Blue/Green and coated it in PVA it might look like water.

Here is my first attempt, the shot with the Bird Dog shows the PVA still slightly wet in places, hence the white lines, as it had not fully filled in the dimples I have now given it another thick coat of PVA and will have to wait for it to dry before I do anything else.

I’m thinking that I could spray colour onto the dry PVA and then apply more PVA to give the water depth.

Thanks Roger, I have now added another coat of PVA to the base and it's looking better, so I think one more coat might just do it. The DFS is I think to bright, so I'm going to re-sprey it with a more cream like yellow to see if that looks better.

My first attempt at a water base has worked out better than I had expected, by using the polystyrene as a base it has given it a rough texture and by adding layers of PVA glue that was brushed into small ripples as it dried, it has given the result I was after.

Now I know it will work I will start again and repeat the process after I have cut out a depression for the floats to sit in. This process might work for small scale ships modeled at anchor, I have an old Airfix Leander in the stash that I planned to build as HMS Dido the first ship I was drafted to.

Splash,

Love the Bird Dog but am simply stunned by the finish on the base. Fantastic! That's another tip I've lodged away for use later.

I have now toned down the yellow on the DFS-194 by mixing buff & yellow.

I'll jump on the band wagon and say that base is absolutely brilliant, such a simply solution but the results are some of the most realistic I've ever seen. Will certainly print that out and put it in the GOOD IDEAS folder. Well done!!!

The Bird Dog looks great. Would you think about posting a "how-to" in the Display and Diorama section about the sea base please? Pretty please? :)

Cheers
