I now have a 1/72 turret blank in resin, the only problem is, I didn’t do all my homework before starting the project I now realise they didn’t use the Cromwell. They only used the Matilda, Grant & Churchill tanks and the only kits of theses subjects in my stash are 1/76 Airfix kits

So cunning plan “C” I’m going to scale my drawings down to 1/76 and using the resin blank, sand it down to reduce it to 1/76 (what can possibly go wrong?)

You have just jogged my memory, I think I have a 1/72 Hasegawa Churchill hiding in my stash, we could be back to plan “B”

A trip to my LMS nabbed me an Airfix Churchill MkVII and a Grant, but research has shown that I need an early Churchill, so I will use a Hasegawa Churchill MkI copy

Churchill CDL? Really? I would have thought the heavy giants would have been needed on the front at that point.

I wasn't aware of the Churchill's use as a CDL vehicle either but it would appear that the conversion is based on an early chassis which was probably considered obsolete by the later war period. Thinking about it though, the Churchill chassis was used for a few different purposes apart from a gun tank - bridgelayer, recovery vehicle, "carpet" layer all spring to mind.

There is evidence that they existed but unfortunately no photographic evedance only a newspaper cartoon (lucky for me ) there is a report of by a member of the 86th Field Regiment RA telling of their use at Kranenburg Germany on the 9th February 1945

There are only two examples of the CDL left in existence, a Matilda in the Bovington Tank Museum and an M3 Grant at the Cavalary Tank Museum in Ahmednagar India.

I agree as others have said, Churchill's are like Spitfires so many different versions you could make a huge collection without duplication

I decided to re-scratch build the turret as it needed the extra flat side plus I was not happy with the top, using the ScaNcut I experimented using .02 plastic card, but not wanting to cut too deep and break the blade i set the pressure to justit score the shapes, it was easy to the snap the shape out like when you work with Vac form kits.

Looks very neatly done and, oh yes, nice round escape hatch!

Dragon do a wide range of various Churchills in 1/72 but they are not cheap .... Armourfast are a good source for a cheap core kit to hack around with .... Airfix have discontinued their one this year, so they will be commanding a tenner a piece soon .... if you can find them or haven't got a few stashed

I thought about the Dragon kits, but as you say are a tad expensive

You are right, now is the time to stock pile them before they get expensive, Luckily I have several Airfix kits in the stash.
