Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
It's been a very long time since I updated here so apologies to all.
I did finish both of the F-5's I was working on:
I have plenty more of those in the stash so will add a few others as the urge takes me.
Currently on the bench I have this old Panzer I that is almost done. I just need to complete the commander and stick him in the turret.
Also on the bench if ever so slightly stalled is his HobbyBoss Sabre.
I intend to convert it to a Sabre Mk.6 of the South African Air Force. I am using the F86-F40 as the basis for this build as it has the slatted wing. Pages have been written about the variations of Sabre wings so I won't go into it here. I have these decals from MAV which look very nice but experience tells me may be problematic.
So far progress has been limited to assembling the fuselage. I drilled out the rather unconvincing looking jet exhaust to allow me to fit a stand up the stove pipe. Here you can see where I've used an old brush cover to hold the wire bar in place. All will become clear once the Sabre is on the stand.
There are a couple of external differences that distinguish the Canadian built Sabres from those built by North American. The Orenda engine requires a pair of air scoops (often referred to as sugar scoops) on the underside beyond the wing. There is also a raised area at the front edge of the tail fin that is not present.
Here you can see that I have made a start on the scoops cut from the ends of some spare pods (which I think came off a Buccaneer!).
More to follow on this one.
Also under construction for the Golden oldies GB is this Hasegawa F-5A conversion to an RF-5A.
All I have done to this one is add the nose and wing tip tanks left over from an earlier F-5 build.
So there you have it, plenty going on but nothing happening fast.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Those F-5's turned out very nicely, OT. The tank is actually a Mark II not a Mark I, OT and it looks very good, the old Tamiya kit I presume? - it's good to see you building on the dark side The F-86 is an interesting build. I have a Heller example (which might be an F86-50?) that at some point I would like to build up into an RAF machine and am I correct in believing that the RAF also bought Canadian build aircraft?
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Nice work all round; the F-5 and F-86 are great looking subjects.

I stand corrected on the tank Shaun.ShaunW wrote:Those F-5's turned out very nicely, OT. The RAF Sabres were Mk.4 Canadian built but were identical to the US F86F-30 I think. The Canadian Mk.5 & 6 used a different engine so had the scoops.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Gotta love an F-5 David. They are rather like Spitfires in that way.
Made some progress with the Sabre build today. Careful sanding of the scoops is ongoing:
As you can see I've closed the air brakes as there was not much detail to show & what there was is incorrect.
Also the wing tips have been cut off, a section equivalent to 12" removed and the tips reattached.
This seems like a lot of work but it's not too challenging and as the kit cost less than a fiver I don't mind ballsing it up.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Coming along there, Ian. Nice work on the Sabre particularly - was the wing shortening due to an error with the kit or a variation in the Mk.6?

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Nice one, OT, not too much at stake with the price of the kit and the additional details will make all the difference. The Heller kit is the F-86-30, not 50 (I don't know where I got that from ) so when I get round to it I might not have too difficult a job to represent an RAF machine.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Nice work on the F-5s, I've just chucked my Matchbox one back in the box of doom as I've sanded a dip in the fuselage when rubbing down the nose joint and just can't seem (no pun intended) to get the wing tank seams right. I'll come back to it in a year or so.

It's the kits fault (honest Guv!). Only the Japanese used the F-40 wing with extended tips so you would need to make that alteration for any other Mk.6 or F86F-40.Spaceowl wrote: was the wing shortening due to an error with the kit or a variation in the Mk.6?

This is all good stuff here. I am just catching up with your builds mate as I have time now, as I have been busy sorting my eldest son with moving to "Borough" as he starts Uni tomorrow.
Cheers

Excellent work throughout OT!
Best wishes

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Thanks guys, I need all the encouragement that I can get.
The RF-5 is progressing although I'm not convinced that the colours are correct.
She will need some touching up before a coat of Klear will be applied. Hopefully that will darken the colours.
I really need to practise more with my airbrush as I am failing to get consistency with it. Although it could be my mixing of paint and thinner that is to blame.
As well as that the Sabre is getting some attention. The U\C on this kit doesn't look much like that of a Sabre which is why I decided to do it in flight.
I seem to have made more work for myself as the doors are too small for the bays.
I've had to pack out the nose wheel bay with blu-tak and plastic card before adding the kit part. Plenty of filler will be needed to hide that gap.
So there you go still plugging away at things when I get the time.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
That might set a record for worst fit on a kit part - Starfix did better than that! Still, keep up the good work, the rest of the kit doesn't seem too bad.
The F-5 looks awesome, however. I think you've caught the look of Asia Minor camo admirably.
