Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Great work O.T. I have a Heller Sabre and I was thinking of using the German markings for nmf on the new Airfix Sabre Will keep my eye on how you get on.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
I've finally managed to sort the Photobucket issues out! So here is a quick progress report:
Just about finished the MiG-21UM in DDR markings.
All I need to do to complete this is attach the drop tank on the centre line pylon and clean up the canopy a little. I'll add some images in the Aviation section once that is done. As you can see I settled on mounting it on some acrylic rod up the jet pipe. It is currently on a temporary stand but will eventually be positioned above my other DDR Migs in the display case. If it looks OK I may add more in flight builds. Making best use of my storage.
Experimenting with Revell Aquacolor metals is occupying me at the moment. Experimenting on this Airfix Sabre I sprayed the central wing panel and a few fuselage panels Steel (36191) and masked them off before spraying the whole fuselage Silver (36190). The Aluminium (36199) looked a little dark to me.
Here it is with the masking tape on:
Removing the tape immediately after spraying:
It looks very grainy in this image but once dry had smoothed itself out nicely.
Here is the whole thing after a coat of Klear.
Not too bad but looks far to shiny for an active war machine so now for the scary bit - applying the promodeller dark dirt wash
Might as well make use of those big ole panel lines Airfix provided.
That's where I left things this morning. As I'm away this weekend you will just have to wait for the results.

Looks like we got the last post twice OT! Great progress on that MiG-21 and I look forward to seeing the outcome of your experiments with the Sabre's NMF - applying that Promodeller panel wash looks a bit nerve wracking!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

It is the first time Shaun but it just rubs off if you don't like the effect.ShaunW wrote: applying that Promodeller panel wash looks a bit nerve wracking!
Not much progress of late as life is getting in the way but the wash was cleaned off the Sabre and the decals are going on.
Those stripes took some fettling with Microsol but look pretty good me thinks.
U\C is now attached although the nose wheel strut is struggling under the weight I put up front to prevent tail sitting.
The F-5B cockpit tub needed some attention - it originally came from an old Airfix Magister.
So some filler & sanding later plus some paint and I think she is ready to close up the canopy.
Dry fitting tells me this may be a problem.
And after another decaling session the Sabre is coming along:
The decals are a mixture of the kit & Microscale. Both have behaved pretty well.
Annoyingly after painting was complete I found an image of the aircraft I am building which shows it did not have the wing fences. Too late now.

Great looking Sabre.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Thanks guys.
The Sabre is about done, just adding the bombs & drop tanks then calling this one finished. I didn't bother with all the stencils as life is too short.
I'll add some images to the Aviation section tomorrow.
I finally got the canopy attached to the F-5B. Fit was not great but I blended it in as best I could. It is a 1980's mold so I guess that should be expected.
Then I mixed up the first coat and squirted it on to see how she looks.
Not too bad but will need another coat. It looks a little too blue to me. This is the aircraft I am trying to represent:
http://cdn-www.airliners.net/photos/air ... .jpg?v=v40
As I don't have the correct FS colours I am mixing my ownusing Xtracrylix paints. This first attempt is 50:50 Hellblau and RAF Sky. I'm thinking a 40:60 mix might just do it.
Also on the bench today is my entry for the Winkle Brown Group Build. This is an old Airfix BV141B.
Fit is surprisingly good for such an old kit but the interior is very sparse. Lots of rivets!
More to follow and thanks for the encouragement guys.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Great work with this trio of interesting a/c OT. I rarely if ever apply all of the stencils to jets, especially in 1/72nd, as I find to do so is too much of an eyesight and patience test and besides on the real thing a number of stencils get worn off or painted over etc.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
It's a long time since I put anything on here chaps, sorry.
Been really busy with domestic chores and group builds for so long but now it is time to clear a few bench queens starting with these two F-5's:
Turkish F-5B (Matchbox 1/72 kit)
And I plan to refurbish this F-5A (Matchbox 1/72 kit) and turn it into a Greek bird.
I found some parts for the F-5B:
The Greek F-5A will be on a stand as I am lacking spare dangly bits for it.
I do like the F-5 family and after these two are out of the way I am planning a triple build of aggressors.

Re: Old_Tonto's Tepee
Nice F-5B. I agree the F-5 family are beautiful aircraft and offer a huge choice of schemes.
