I really liked that shot with the four aircraft together. What a colorful and great looking gang! I'm shocked that the Cobra is so small next to the zero.

Back from my summer jaunt and after catching with with work I've been tinkering here and there with a few bits I'd left on the bench.
A Matchbox Lightning F6, Matchbox F-5A and the old Airfix Tomcat. I'll add a few images shortly.
The Lightning has had it's camo applied, detail painting to do next. The F-5A is in primer, should be finished as a Norwegian bird and the Tomcat has had some sub assemblies done, it will of course be finished (decals willing) in Wolfpack markings.

Update pics of current tinkerings. Undecided with the Lightning as to 5 or 11 sqn.

The Lightning looks good, Shane and I really like the fact that there is plenty of classic raised panel detail left, which is something I aim for with a classic build as opposed to sanding off and re-scribing. That Airfix Tomcat looks like a good subject for a flaps and spoilers deployed build to me

Cheers Shaun, I did give the Lightning a slight rub over to reduce the raised detail but you can't really tell. The T.55 fuselage is almost smooth in comparison. Not a chance of me cutting and faffing with that Tomcat, will be hard enough to hide the split fuselage seams without creating extra work. I'll let you stick to that end of classic modelling!

That's a cracking lightning - Great work. Yours looks much better than the 5 sqn bird I built earlier in the year.

The F-5 will be good, as will the F-14. How do you find the Airfix kit? I have this and the Hasegawa kit in the stash and I have to say I fancy building the Airfix kit more.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...

That's a fine Lightning (and you can't have too many) - interested on your work on the Airfix F-14 as I recently got one for a bargain. It looks like a decent enough take on the early Tomcat.

Sir T & MDT, it looks like a Tomcat so that will do for me. Nice raised detail in the cockpit but not an accurate tub. The main parts have fine raised detail too but no wheel well detail. I cut the wing vanes and glued them in place as they were deactivated in service, the main wings will still swing. This kit is a mishmash of 2 I had, one in white plastic the other grey. The white was from the first issue but had missing parts while they gray had a warped main fuselage. This does give me both an early and a late decal set so as long as they don't fall apart in the water I can add stenciling to the weapon load out.

The Tomcat looks interesting in two-tone plastic!
Liking the Lightning very much too
Best wishes

Hey Shane

I recently acquired the Matchbox Chinook. Did you find any particular issues with your build?

I have their Wessex and I found some of the detail was a bit soft and there was a lack of positive location points (e.g on the fuselage halves). Did you find the same with the Chinook?

Cheers

Hi Springy, of the 2 I preferred the Wessex and would build another . Don't let the following put you off.....
The Chinook was hard work all round. I couldn't get the I.P to fit correctly, the 3 point fuselage made for lots of filling and sanding underneath and upper seam. You can't see anything of the interior if you fasten up the rear and very little in the office. Paint it black and leave it. The aerial poles needed trimming down as they were too long and not every locating point was well defined. I opted to leave the fuselage sides unglazed until after painting, this in itself caused issues as it doesn't sit right in the ports which required fettling and touching in of the paint work. All the underside aerials and suchlike are butt joined. Lastly the decals required work to get rid of the gloopy white stuff and the stencils needed trimming down the carrier film to avoid silvering. I also cut down the pegs for the rotors as they sat to high otherwise. I used blutak to hold them in place so I can remove them for storage / transport.

Now I'm not saying I was blameless during construction but felt no love for this one at all and it was built over a few months coming back to it when I could be bothered. At the end of it all it looks like a Chinook and the paintwork wasn't too bad.

So, apart from that then, it's not a bad Chinook kit? :ha: :ha:

Not much in the way of progress, busy defleet period at work has meant a lot of miles and extra hours.
Anyhow a kind of spur of the moment trip to the Brampton show yesterday has lit the modelling fires again.
I've made a start decaling the Matchbox Lightning.Settled on an 11 Sqn aircraft from the Finningley Jubilee Airshow 1977.
