Marek wrote:Andrew, I meant that the real-life P-38 from the museum (link you provided) looked like one of my unfinished efforts :), I was not pointing to your model which is basically almost complete and looking quite good. The Hobbyboss on the other hand, I became rather disillusioned with this line. Old maxim 'you get what you paid for' has been completely true so far. The MS406, even though was somehow a hit-n-miss copy of hasegawa, had this feel of cheap thing. More of a Intech/ancient Cooperativa than Heller or even ancient Airfix. It was more of this distant hint that whoever has pantographed this one, must have been armchair-bound for life without possibility to even see any plane ever on TV. But on the other side, it did get me back to the bench :).
Hmmm. I built the Hobby Boss MS-406 converted to a D-3801. I enjoyed it a great deal. It. Heeded some extra loving, but then so does the Hasegawa kit. My sole disappointment with the HB release was the decal subject.

Andrew, your MS came out quite well.
Really nothing pithy to say.

Text coming later - I have been tasked with making lunch first!

After lunch:

Here's the progress on the Skyray. The cockpit has been finished. Intake splitter plates have been thinned, and the sink holes filled with Vallejo platic putty. The leading edge slats have now been posed in the down position.

Image

Postman Pat is pleased with progress :ha:
The main wheel bays are fixed in the fuselage. The toothpicks are wedging them in at the right angle.

Image

The seat has been built up with 1 mm plastic card for cushions to get the pilot to sit right.

Image

There's also a 1 mm backing plate behind the seat.

Image

I've added pull handles for the Martin-Baker Mk 5 seat from fine wire. The Revell pilot has been posed in the seat. The cockpit coaming has been shortened by 3mm, so the instrument panel is now behind the joystick  I've also added the radar screen below the panel.

Image

Ready for some primer! :)

Postman Pat will never fit into that, you may have to carry out some surgery on his legs first!

He's in charge of the flight deck. :-D

If I was being cynical, I would say the sculpting on Potman Pat is better than on the Revell pilots set. But I'd never be that cynical, would I :?:

Nice work. The LE slats have dropped well and will push this build into the realms of reasonable accuracy I'm sure :-D I would put a helmet on Pat's head and stick him in there. Those Blue Team pilots are not amongst the world's finest......

The bench is currently crowded with stuff!

Here's the Tornado ECR in 1.144 - Luftwaffe Tigermeet. I got a bit delayed on this because the pilot figures I ordered only arrived on Christmas Eve:

Ozmods pilots duly primed

And their tub ready:

I've lost one of the instrument panels, so a quick replacement will be made once I've got the pilots in their seats.

Meanwhile the interior of the Skyray got a coat of dark grey primer. Once I've painted the pilot figure, the fuselage can go together.

Image

I've also remembered to glue some weight into the nose!

cheers

I'll assume you got more than two of those pilots!?!
Great little kit, that one...looks the business when done and I do hear tell that there's another commemorative 1/144 Tonka out fairly soon.

Bruce

My supplier only had one pack in stock

Revell seem to bring out commemorative editions of the Tornados frequently. I reckon they are in cahoots with the Luftwaffe, who keep on turning up to Tigermeets with spectacular decorations. :)

Interesting kit that little Tonka - I wonder how those tiger stripe decals will work out.

The wee Germans and the not so wee American have been painted and are ready for their comfy chairs. I hope to get the Skyray fuselage and wings buttoned up in the morning. :)

A brief modelling session this morning has got the Skyray fuselage together. The wings are push fitted at the moment.

Image

The fit behind the canopy is not great. This afternoon I intend to take the wings off and apply some serious clamping pressure!
I've also filled the gaps of the leading edge flaps.
I did have to do some filing to thin the cockpit down a little in order to get the fuselage to fit together.

Meanwhile the tiny Tonka crew are in their seats - which meant that the front instrument panel didn't fit  This kit is not designed to be crewed up.
As the crew occupy the pit nicely, I've omitted the IP altogether. :-D

Image

It's modelling Jim, but not as we know it

Give Postman Pat a yellow jersey with AIR BOSS on the back. He will be "large and in charge."

Yes and Pat's black and white cat could be in charge of the...err...cat shots (I'll get my coat).

The Skyray is looking nice - with the wings push fitted that unmistakable shape is shown in all its glory.

That tiny Tonka cockpit will be plenty filled by the crew, no one will miss the IP and we won't breathe a word guvnor
