That's an interesting collection of Lizzies you are building Santiago. Do you make your own decals?

Hi Old tonto

A friend of us make the very "rare" decals for us, like nose arts, etc but we try to use the ones we have in our spare decals folders. My father has two big folders with lots of decals and he has always been able to find the ones he need or "cut" and "paste" some of them in order to get what we need.

Santiago,

As ever, I am amazed at the speed and quality of the builds you and your father undertake. Your father appears to have replaced / modified the cowling & engine of the old Airfix kit(s). Is this correct and, if so, could he give any details on what he's done?

(When I built the Airfix Lizzie, I just replaced engine and cowling with a resin / white metal version from Aeroclub).

Martin

Yes, He use one of the Airfix cowling as master, (after improving a bit ) and the clone 3 pieces. Then he modified each one in order to obtain a correct cowling for each version. (I, II, III). For example, he will do the same for the RCAF cowling which are different from the British ones.

I have a question. Do you know the color of the "front" part of the cowling?

Many thanks in advance

Kind regards

Santiago,

Do you mean the exhaust collector ring at the very front of the cowling? If so, I've seen a number of different interpretations. The all-black (Shuttleworth?) Lizzie looks as if its a steel colour, but I believe that these parts discoloured over time due to the hot exhaust gasses inside. I generally paint them a metallic steel colour, then dry-brush red-brown as below. However, I don't know how accurate this is - but I'm sure someone on-site will know!

Yep, it's this colour Santiago. This has not had many hours to weather and discolour as it is a rebuild, but it starts out natural metal and eventually discolours with the high exhaust temperature to a more bronze colour. I mix Humbrol 56 with Humbrol Antique Bronze about 60% to 40%. After it dries, I burnish it with a cloth and you get a nice metallic effect. The colours can vary with the applied heat from pale straw through bronze to deep blue where it has got really hot. I would think that the collector ring would be wiped with some presevative to stop it rusting when not in use. Martin has it about right by drybrushing over steel.

Some more nice work there Santiago. You and your Father are building up another wonderful collection.

Hi guys

Many thanks for your replies.

Thank Martin for your comments. Your Lysander looks really good. Is it 1/72 scale?.
We will do one Lysander in SEAC markings this for sure.

Hi Chuck E. Many thanks for the photos and explanation about the color of the collector ring. I know now how to paint it.

Here are a couple of photos showing the advance made by my father on the first 4 Lysanders
