Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Nice choice David, that Esci Harrier will likely be a good build for you. My Airfix 1/48th Sea Harrier also suffers with deep sink holes in the outriggers.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Terrific finish on the F-4F David. That's a really unique camo scheme

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Thanks, chaps.
I have got the old Hurricane's wheels on. I am trying to improve the primitive wheel attachment with a representation of 4 spokes to hide it.
If I can simply glue the 4 spokes over the wheel hub area and paint it, hopefully it will look passable.
The RPs were so poorly moulded - I have cleaned them up but on a couple the cruciform fins are not at all cruciform in section!
Where to draw the line on tampering with a classic kit?
I have applied the makeshift 'wheel hubs' which are indeed passable. And decals are applied - from various sources except for the serials as a nod to the original kit decal sheet.
The squadron codes are from an old Almark sheet of codes, where they looked medium grey, but on the model they look sky. I suppose that is a close match for the white codes in the original decal sheet. You can see the few improvements I have made - the rocker cover bumps on the cowling, nav lights and landing light cutouts, u/c support strut, and replacement spinner (because the original 1-piece part lost a prop blade).
Cheers,
David

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I like your efforts with the four spoke wheels David and I think that is a worthwhile thing to do as they are quite visible on the finished model. I often have to check myself when adding detail to old kits as it is easy to get carried away and end up with a detail and filler fest stretching out over months As to whether you improve the RP's depends upon how much more time you want to invest in the build. As it stands, the age of the moulding is given away by the fact that the u/c is mounted outside of the wheel wells, but that will not really be noticeable once the model is the right way up so it depends whether the uneven RP fins offend your eye or are they safely buried under the wings?

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
We were posting at the same time, Shaun. I simply edited the earlier post with an update and photo.
I will leave the offending RP fins (only 2 out of 8 are out of true) as a reminder of 1958 quality! That's my lazy excuse!
Cheers,
David

I do like the Phantom, David, but I love what you're doing with the old Hurricane. I know it's really old, maybe not that accurate and low on detail but it looks great to my eyes and brings back lots of memories.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
That Phantom is going to look excellent when it's finished David. I've built a few F-4's over the years, more than any other single type in fact, but I've never built one in Luftwaffe colours.

definitely a nostalgia hit! this is one of the first 3 kits I built, way back in the dim, distant past - all Airfix: This Hurricane IVRP, the Me109F and the Bristol Fighter.
I remember all these models were unpainted and covered in glue!
Off tomorrow for a long weekend to attend another airshow and nearby model club exhibition, about 300 miles south of where I am.
So work is stalled for a few days.
cheers,
David
