Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I think you arrived at a very good approximation of Norm81 doing it the way you have described. Being a photographic buff, I will always put any small discrepancies on light, camera calibration and monitor color calibration . The end result will be a stunning Phantom.

Phantastic work so far.Well tidy.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
The Phantom has temporarily taken a back seat to the other kits on the bench.
I reckon the B-58 is closest to the home stretch so I have spent quite a bit of time on the wheels and preparing all the underslung bits to be firmly attached. I am finally getting a good feeling about this model. Not my best, but a reasonable recovery after so many years in the wilderness.
The IL-2T has had the cockpit inserted.
That is quite busy enough for the thick transparencies. I even left some tiny cockpit bits off the sidewalls. Too vague and no positive location. And there is no gunsight; there are delicate marks on the windscreen, but no sign of guns on this torpedo version. The thing in the rear cockpit is the sling for the gunner to sit on. The gun is yet to be added. I hope that is a well-armoured fuel tank between the two crew stations. But then the whole cockpit tub was well-armoured!
The under-fuselage radiator was a poorly-fitting and over-engineered item of several parts, needing to be modified to accommodate the torpedo. I did my best and it looks quite convincing. The prominent upper fuselage air scoop ahead of the cockpit was also supplied in two parts forming the intake trunk; awkward to place and not really visible after construction. Dako has really tried to give you your money's worth!
cheers,
David

The IL-2's cockpit is looking very nice. That sling looks like it makes for one uncomfortable ride though! Is that really all that is back there for the gunner!
Likin' the Phantom too.

There is a box on the rear bulkhead not visible in that view, and that's it! The gun mounting and the gun will help to distract from the wide open spaces, ha ha!PGAS wrote:Is that really all that is back there for the gunner!
The 1/72 B-58 wheel painting is completed! Now waiting for the wheel bogies to set at the right angle before mounting the wheels.
The large external tank has been mounted. Look at how close it gets to the nose wheel leg! The u/c leg was designed to fold up and forwards.
Notches have been cut in the leading edge of the wings and fin for the nav and anti-collision lights.
I will apply the decals before the engines and flaps go on, followed by the windscreen, canopy hatches and u/c bay doors.
Thanks for looking,
David
Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I guess the gunner has free range with no seat! Could have its benefits.
That Hustler! One great looking beastie! Love the NMF with the flat grey panels. Lining up all those wheels should be fun!
Love looking at your work David!

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Wow! There is a lot of work in that 1/72 Hustler!
The wheels are on, decals are on, and flaps are on.
Decals are kit decals wherever I could use them, and a few for the Bendix Trophy winner from the Microscale sheet. There are absolutely no decals on the undersurfaces!
The refuelling receptacle markings are made from yellow stripe decals.
As soon as the flaps are secure I will tackle the u/c bay doors and engines. Once mounted, there will be a bit of cleanup necessary around the engine pylons.
cheers,
David

The b-58 is superb, but I'm even more impressed with the il-2 cockpit. Such nice touches of detail!

There's nought wrong with that Hustler, makes me itch to start my Academy (Hobbycraft) 1/144 kit.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Thanks, chaps.
Just when I have a good feeling about this model, the Hustler continues to fight back!!! One of the flaps, mounted at a slightly depressed angle, has fallen off. Originally these were not separate parts. In attempting to reattach it with superglue I made a mess of it. Aaarrgh! I now have to repaint 3 shades of NMF on the detached flap and hope it matches the other one!
After this, I am going to take a loooong break from NMF! Or just stick to one reliable shade.
Wish me luck!

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Sorry to hear of the glue troubles David. She is sweet though. The NMF looks fantastic, especially the various shades on the engines. One speedy looking bird! Good luck with the flap but I have no doubt you will pull it off!
