Great work with the crew hatches - you must have the patience of a saint, David!

Actually, I personally don't think so. A real saint would have self-combusted 50 paces from my cussing and swearing over these fiddly bits!
I am only persevering because I am close to the finish line, and this is, after all, the sexiest bomber that ever flew! This model will not be competition worthy, but it can't help looking beautiful.
All the hatches are on; touch-ups completed.

It only remains to Kristal Kleer the 4 crew view ports and nav lights. Maybe another coat of Pledge after that.
Then I can finally move on.

Cheers,

David

That Hustler certainly is a thing of beauty David, you have done a cracking job of that!

At last! Progress on the Dakoplast 1/72 IL-2T.

Image

The torpedo bomber is standing on its main undercarriage.
I have a mind to brush-paint the lower surfaces to avoid messing around with masking the u/c and wheel wells.

cheers,

David

Woah! The aircraft looks great but with that background it looks like something out of Tron :-D

Hmmm...I wonder if there is a Tron what-if possibility buried there?

The Hustler is declared done! I will put up some photos in a couple of days.
I need a rest from that epic project. This is what I found in the stash, about to be disposed off and now rescued - one of the first three construction kits I ever built, back in the early 60s.

Image

The other two were the contemporary Airfix Me-109F and Bristol Fighter.
Nothing fancy. I will do it as Airfix intended in the 60s (but with less glue messing up the canopy!) I might draw the line at the decals, though, and replace them.
Edit:
Well, that was the intention. One of the propeller blades is detached from the spinner, and after the spinner is cleaned up, it is obvious that the detached blade is too short, and it will be too weak if repaired.

Image

So I have found a replacement from the spares box. A slim shim in the forward fuselage will be necessary to make the spinner look right (the nose looks a bit narrow anyway). I have also raided the carby intake from the Airfix new-tool Mk IIc kit. (I will build that as the SEAC example with the tropical filter). And I will scratch-build a pitot. The flying control hinge lines are very soft so I have already re-scribed those, and just a few basic panel lines on the otherwise featureless wings (this was before rivets!)

In consideration of the kit markings, I did some research. KW919 was indeed a Hurricane, quite possibly a Mk.IV. 164 Sqn used Mk.IV Hurricanes with FJ codes for a year from February 1943. But the kit does not have the big Mk.IV radiator, so I reckon I can get away with any eight-gun Mk.IIA markings.
And I will have to forego the lovely RPs! That's a shame!

Cheers,

David

This is a golden oldie David, by the time I started modelling in 1973 Series 1 kits were being produced in the hard plastic blister packs. Marvellous and I look forward to seeing your build of this one.

Thanks, Daz.
So I have been able to make progress on painting both the IL-2T and the F-4F.

Image

I don't have a selection of Russian AF colours, so I mixed that brown, matching with colour photos. I have a green that seems a close match.
One more topside grey to go on the Phantom. (The masking to keep up with the changes is a bit of a trial). One tailplane is done! Woohoo! Then the underside grey (already done) repeated on the sides of the intake and the spine. I am not familiar with the Phantom Norm 81A scheme in the flesh. These colours represent my effort to match to an internet colour chart (based on Ha-Hen Decals colour call-out). It certainly does not gel with the suggested colours in the 1980s era Esci instructions for this type of scheme. That shiny grey over the mid-fuselage is the only authentic RAL shade that I have (basalt grey).

Now where is that old Airfix Hurricane hiding?

cheers,

David

A great looking pair David - sorry but thanks to my dodgy colour vision that I can never trust 100% I can't help regarding matching up shades nor can I really comments on the shades that you have used  It does have the advantage of keeping me out of those arguments on this shade or that though!

No worries, Shaun. I shall prevail!
In the meantime here is the laborious masking on the torpedo bomber, using pre-used scraps of Tamiya tape.

Aha! I see I have missed a bit on the top of the fin!
Back to work!

cheers,

David

It's time consuming but it still give the best soft edge effect at this scale.

Finally, 4 camo greys on the F-4F upper surfaces:

Image

The wings are still masked because there is some minor airbrush patching to be done where coverage was insufficient.

And major painting is finished on the IL-2T as well:

Image

So today I managed to make a start on the ancient Airfix Hurricane. The pilot has been painted. Surprisingly the pilot's 'bench seat' was missing altogether; no sign of it.
Feeling the itch for a restoration job now. Which one will it be?

Thanks for looking,

David
