Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Hmmm... James Perrin's old post here https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/gregers ... 4-s10.html shows how my destroyed fin stripes can be painted. If I do that I will have to do it now before more decals go on.
It would be easier at this stage to find a pair of those lightning bolt TAC badges.
Cheers,
David

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
How bizarre, I could barely find any pictures of silver F-105's when I built mine and the Monogram kit had actual the markings I wanted! What's the sqn as the painting I cribbed from had no details in the comment?
You could also try painting the stripes onto decal film, as it may be easier to get the spacing even.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Good suggestion about painting on decal sheet, James. I am still hunting for the TAC lightning bolts as an easy way out (or unpainted fin - even easier!)
Yes, the Monogram 'Tour of Duty' boxing had these markings. The unit is the 23TFS, 36TFW. You will find a reference to an F-105D based in Bitburg in 1962, and an F-105F at the 1965 Paris Air Show.
Cheers,
David

Nice work as always, especially the cockpits. Never seen decals applied with the parts still on the sprue before!

Me neither, but it seems to have worked very well!Stamford wrote:Nice work as always, especially the cockpits. Never seen decals applied with the parts still on the sprue before!

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Thanks, chaps.
I am relieved. I found the TAC lightning bolt decals in a rivet-laden Trumpeter F-105D kit. I have other plans for that kit, so those decals are now on the F-105F. No need for fancy painting!
On the other hand, I am going through a period of serious distraction by other imperatives making demands on my time (holiday planning, downsizing and associated stash-reduction).
I will have to ignore the other kits on the bench and simply dabble with the Thud for the time being.
Cheers,
David

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Good grief, man. This Thud is already looking the business. Nice paint scheme. I haven't seen many 105's in bare metal. This one looks boss.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Very slow progress, as noted earlier.
So I am pleased to do a little more on the Thud.
The airbrake petals are painted. Not sure whether to try some 'blueing' on these parts, or leave as is.
Painted with Modelmaster Metalizers lacquers; titanium and exhaust, and a little Humbrol 27002 mixed in for the brighter bits.
The others on the bench are stalled in this condition.
Thanks for looking,
Cheers,
David

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I can but agree, that is a great looking NMF on the Thunderchief. Look at the lines of that VC-10 as well, one of the best looking airliners ever built IMHO.

I agree completely with Shaun. Love the finish and the VC-10.

A lot of great WIPs here. That Thunderchief is stealing the show. Nice one!

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Thanks, chaps!
Still slow progress on the Thud 2-seater. Here I have put in the canopy struts (paperclip painted matt black, superglued into drilled holes). I had to previously add a bit of styrene behind the rear bulkhead for something to drill into!
Canopies are nearly ready. Just need to finish the undercarriage before I can mount the open airbrake petals.
I have mentioned that I presently have other distractions. One of them has turned out to be a what-if project that has jumped the queue (to partly satisfy my local model group meeting next week). This is a very unusual subject and I reckon you will like it! At my rate of progress, maybe another month for that one!
Cheers,
David
