Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Thanks, Nigel.
2nd pic of the VC10 new build. This model will be wheels-up on a stand.
Windows filled, primer tested and scribing completed all round. I don't trust the wing halves to not flex and spring open, so some internal stiffening/separation may help.
Hmmm...I wonder if I should also slide in a wing spar? Might try that.
This is how build times balloon out!
Cheers,
David

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
The VC-10 is such a great looking aircraft, even the RAF's best efforts with drab paint and refuelling equipment didn't spoil those gorgeous lines. How is this one going to be built, David? Airliner as God intended or RAF?

Not as nature intended, Shaun! In RAF transport colours. Still quite attractive, I think.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Yes I would agree, David, RAF transport colours are not a bad choice but overall I still prefer the VC in BOAC livery. Anyhoo, I look forward to seeing more of this build as it is a great looking aircraft.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
It is quite a slog making the old Airfix kit better. I could very well be tempted to do another, as Airfix intended, in the original BOAC livery, if I had some modern decals. I more or less restored an Airfix 707 using the original kit BOAC decals and they were well past their use-by date.ShaunW wrote:but overall I still prefer the VC in BOAC livery.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Very nice progress on the Gnat's cockpit David. I too found the intakes which are part of the cockpit sidewalls finicky. It is a great little kit though and I look forward to seeing your build.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I remember starting school here in january 1970. there were lots of kids with BOAC VC-10 shoulder bags. My wife and her family flew over in 1964, whereas we took the 6 week option on the migrant ship. Quite an adventure for a 7 year old though

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
I am sorry I have never flown in VC10, 707, Brittania, Concorde. Managed to fit in many F-27, Viscount, even Skymaster, in my younger days (all Indian Airlines), and later, a couple of goes in Aussie DC-3s after its 50th anniversary! Other garden-variety airliners not mentioned.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
The only British airliner I have flown in was the BAC 111 and Super 111 back in the 70's on school skiing holidays. Other than that it's been a diet of Boeings (737, 747, 757, 767) and various Airbuses (I can't remember the models, as I'm not all that up on Airbus, save for a memorable flight home from Canada on an A-340, which passed over the Greenland coast). Only one turboprop, a Saab, but I can't remember the model.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
That would be the SAAB 340, Shaun. Quite common in Aussie skies.ShaunW wrote:Only one turboprop, a Saab, but I can't remember the model.
Finally, assembly started on the VC10.
This photo tries to show the scribing that replaces the raised panel lines on the wings and tailplanes. The access panels were left on the topsides of the wings, but removed from the undersides. A styrene chute has been positioned (at a slightly raked angle) for a cylindrical rod stand, and the hole where the fuselage tanking apparatus was, is waiting to be covered in Humbrol model filler. Lots of filler on this model, and more to come!
Also the wing fences have been severely shortened, and an additional, longer pair will be installed much further inboard.
Gnat ejection pull handles in progress. Fuse wire shaped and painted yellow.
Thanks for looking,
David

That's a cool mod with the wooden pegs, David. I am totally stealing that.

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
David looking forward to seeing the finished VC-10. I was lucky to be a passenger in one one of these in my Army days, beats travelling by a Herc any day. I like your pull handles as well, very nice.
Cheers

Re: Skypirate's Hideaway
Monogram 1/72 F-105F internals painted and weathered.
All the external surfaces have been gently rubbed down with the local equivalent of T-cut and then polished with a soft cloth. I though this was going to be the first stage of a NMF but it turns out the aircaft was painted with a protective silver paint.
These old Monogram kits are beautifully detailed, if you can live with the raised panel lines. I can! There are too many to rescribe, and so much fine detail will be lost in the cleanup.
And here are all the cockpit parts relating to work in progress. All 1/72.
Have to be careful to put the right parts in the right model!
Cheers,
David
