Nice weathering on the undersides David. A pity about the strut coming away, as you say , tough to get a strong bond again.

The weathering looks excellent, David and has really given the model that late war well worn look. The breakage of the u/c oleo is potentially a bit of a problem as they can be difficult to reattach with the same strength that the original mounting provided. These days the u/c parts are among the last that I fit post decals and canopy as in my experience many u/c units don't have the durability to stand up to the model being repeatedly picked up and set down as is the case whilst work is being carried out - my particular talent is breaking wheels off, which creates similar reattachment issues  If it were my build I think I would look to reattach the strut using a stronger adhesive such as CA or two-part epoxy.

Great work one the 109, I've had one in the stash for years but the intricacies of Luftwaffe camo have put me off so far.

Shaun,
you would think I had worked this out by now! Yes, leave u/c to the end like mass balances and canopies. Maybe I should have taken the hint and broken the other one off too! Anyway, it has been reattached with a tiny piece of fuse wire dowel and CA. And more CA.
After all these years, and inspired by the local group of scale modellers that I convene monthly, my mind is slowly turning to dioramas (beyond Coastal Kits bases). Maybe this 109 should be a permanant feature, propped up on trestle! I have bought a resin set of Allied 1/72 fuel drums. Have to learn how to paint that stuff!

Shane, this 109 is 2nd in a project to tackle unusual late-model 109 camo schemes. There is no end to the possibilities. I hope to do maybe 7 or 8. I have accrued some of the AZ varieties to supplement the Hasegawa and Academy kits in the stash. But there are simpler schemes, including all one colour, you can start with.

In the meantime, I have started preparing the G-10 Erla canopy parts. I chose the Heller canopy from the 109K kit so it can be posed open. The Revell canopy is one piece. So I need to attach the armoured rear glazing to the open hood. I think this will work; I had to do something similarly crude in 1/48 - easier to see the crude bits in that scale!

Image

The canopy parts have already been dipped in Pledge. The curved styrene 'arms' behind the armoured glass will have to be fixed to the inside of the top canopy frames. Hmmmm....will I get away with a spot of polystyrene cement? Will white glue be strong enough?
Am I crazy?

While looking for a new kit to start, I remembered that I had already started an Airfix VC-10. That is making slow going because I have not yet filled and smoothed the windows satisfactorily. I must have had 5 goes at it! I hope this last attempt will allow me to proceed. I need more variety, so other kits are sneaking up on the bench.
Watch this space!

Thanks for looking,

David

Well, the 109 is done! Pics planned for the weekend.

I have declared the VC10 windows filled and I am busy making a mess of rescribing, fixing mistakes, etc..

So a mini-stash has hit the bench!

Image

After the 109, a preponderance of 1/72 jets. These have queue-jumped the 1/48 Buccaneer, hamstrung by its size and reputation.
The little Gnat needs no introduction. The old Hasegawa P-47 Razorback will be completed in French markings - I was inspired by the FROG kit (decals shown), but I have nice Model Art decals for that scheme. The other two jets (and the Gnat) are all going to be opportunities for further NMF practice! (I am encouraged by my recent results with the Italeri B-58 and Matchbox Mirage IIIBS. Those were not examples of Alclad finish, with which I have had mixed results).
Excepting the Gnat, these have all been awaiting attention for a loooong time.

The bigger jets may have decal problems. My choice of Microscale F-100 decals look like they do not fit the kit well. Trimming will be required. The Monogram F-105 decals are the old shiny type, and I am a bit nervous of those. (I have alternative Microscale markings for a SEA camouflaged aircraft, but it will be a bit late to choose those if the NMF kit decals stuff up).

All tips gratefully accepted!

Wonderful Me109 David. Love the oil streaks on the bottom of the fuselage. Sorry about the landing gear. I hate when I bust them too. I usually use globs of epoxy and hope no one sees into the gear well.

Well, that foray into the stash was a bit ambitious! The F-100 has been returned, and the P-47 is looking nervous.
Both the other jets are started with cockpit pre-shading, seat painting etc.
Rescribing of the VC10 is complete so I should be able to start some assembly soon. I foresee more priming and surface preparation ahead! Work so far does not photograph well.

Here is a photo of the 1/72 Gnat in the works.

Image

I found the intakes and associated sidewalls are very fussy to install, and some fettling was necessary. A little filler will be required on the outside.
I am not sure how to pick out the moulded details on the grey sidewalls. I suppose I will start with a thin wash.

Thanks for looking,

David

I am committed to the Hasegawa 1/72 P-47D! I have built one of these before. A bit of the wing root on the wings must be cut away to match the wheel well on the fuselage pieces.
Pre-shaded in hand-brushed Humbrol 33, then the interior colours airbrushed.

Image

More hand painting on engine parts, then seat belts, etc. You can't see much of that 'bench' seat when closed up and covered in belts.
Fortunately one of the options on the Model Art decal sheet is specified as having the Curtiss Electric prop in the kit.
The Modellers Lament - Hopefully this will be a simple OOB build for a change!

A rare event in my experience:

Image

The Gnat IP fits without any fettling at all! A small thing (no pun intended) but thank you, Airfix!

Cheers,

David

I have only ever built one P-47 and that was the Heller P-47N back in the 90's. Like my lack of Japanese and Italian subjects, I really should make amends. The Jug is a great subject with its no-nonsense looks and there are many schemes to choose from. That Airfix new tool Gnat looks good, I have some of the old tool ones with Red Arrows markings and which are unfortunately moulded in red plastic

I have repainted the Gnat's seats. Found a photo and tried to replicate the belt arrangement. Quite a bit fiddly in 1/72!

Image

All held together with superglue. I have since painted the belts matt black, and I hope that some delicate dry-brushing will show up the intricacy. Tiny holes have been drilled for ejection pull handles made from fuse wire.
By comparison, the F-105F seats are a piece of cake.

Image

Again, some more dry-brushing necessary.
The P-47D seat is too embarrassing to photograph.

Now, must get back to that VC10!

Fiddly they are in 1/72, that is why we love 'em :). Nice progress on both pipes.

Great work, David. Seat belts, particularly the spider's web that is a lot of ejection seat harnesses, can be a proper test of eyesight and patience in 1/72nd!
