The Zero really is a great kit and possibly the best of the recent single seater new tools from Airfix.
Looking forward to seeing the VC10 progress

Work in progress:
Airfix 1/144 VC10 needs just the inner wing fences before painting can commence.
Hasegawa 1/72 P-47D undersurfaces pre-shaded and completed.
Airfix 1/72 A6M2b pre-shaded all round.
The 1/72 Airfix Gnat is very close to first colours.
Cheers,
David

Some great progress on the bench, David. I've said it before but I'll say it again, that VC-10 has wonderful lines - 'tis a thing of beauty

The old Airfix VC10 is a lot of work:
- Blank and fill the windows and door positions - lots and lots of sanding and refilling
Sand down raised panel lines on wings and tailplane (except access hatches on topside of wings) and rescribe
Scribe some fuselage panel lines
Scribe some fin panel lines
Brace fuselage interior (there is only one bulkhead behind the cockpit)
Brace wing interior near the fuselage
Remove refuelling gear under fuselage (and patch the great big hole), and fill slots under wings
Hide the gap in the engine cowlings between each pair of engines
Shorten outboard wing fences
Add inboard wing fences
So I started on the last piece of the VC10 puzzle - the new inboard wing fences.
Turns out that the end of the Airfix wing slats have to be rescribed further outboard so that the fences can be positioned accurately. To be fair, the original VC10 did not have these fences.
The pencil line shows the position and length of the slat. The model putty is inboard of the new scribing.
The slats are roughly cut out. I have to match the curve of the wing at the forward end; first the joining surface, then the top to match the curve.
Fingers crossed!
Meanwhile Airfix A6M2b major painting is complete, Hasegawa P-47D painting is well advanced (only topsides to be done), Gnat is primed and silver coat applied (lots of masking ahead), and the secret what-if is edging closer to priming!
Thanks for looking
David

I can appreciate that there's a lot of work gone into that VC-10, David and it is looking excellent. Well worth the effort so far if you ask me!
RIP Tom Petty.

I love the VC10 and spent a very happy day at Brize Norton sitting say the end of the runway with them doing circuits skive me. Also 558 and that huge great Russian transport!
Looking forward to seeing your '10 progress

Indeed.
Possibly the last great American Rock 'n' Roller, and what a tight band. He also did a lot for musician's rights. There is great documentary on Netflix.
For me he was a relatively late discovery, and I will miss him.
cheers,
David

At last! The Airfix VC10 is primed and ready to commence painting.
The Hasegawa 1/72 P-47D has major painting completed:
The Airfix Zero is at a similar stage:
The Airfix Gnat is ready for the masking process. I am not sure about this silver finish from an old Testors enamel bottle. Looks very shiny over Tamiya rattle-can fine white primer.
Seem to have a nice pace going!
Thanks for looking,
David

Great looking work as always, David. Perhaps that Gnat is a bit on the shiny side, but that's NMF for you. Also, what colour is the Zero? Is that linen? Looks great too. And the Jug looks terrific so far.

Thank you.
I hope I can tone down the Gnat with some post-shading. It is not supposed to be NMF - just painted silver!
The Zero is painted in good old 'hemp' which is a reasonable approximation of the notoriously tricky Japanese early-war Ame-iro shade. I used Xtracolour enamels, but Humbrol also offer it.
Cheers,
David

A neat selection as always, David.
The P-47 and zero are looking really great. Looks like hemo is a nice shade to capture that brownish gray hue the early ones had.

Great stuff, David, excellent progress with these three. With my Spitfire 22, that is supposed to be in a painted High Speed Silver finish, I toned down the shiny silver with semi-matt varnish after the decals had gone on - TBH I would have done so had the aircraft been in NMF as well, to my eyes models shouldn't be too shiny and I prefer to scale back such finishes, but of course that is just my personal opinion.
