Stamfords Shed End Thread

Post by Stamford »

Well I´m back. Merely closing down the entire site is not enough to lose me! To re-cap I´m currently struggling with the Revell He 177 which is a very nice kit. Just added the masks to the dome at the front - if you build this kit buy the masks this would have been murder otherwise. You can skip the etch as the cockpit detail is very good anyway. Bit more masking today and I´m going to spray her tomorow. Heres a pic of the Acadamy 109G which I have been using as a test bed for colours. Anybody who has tried to get Tamiya references to German greys will bow their heads in sympathy. But then on the other hand why would Tamiya bother to produce rlm colours - is there a market? YES !
Anyway quite a nice kit - the fit of the canon bulges is very poor though. The decals were good though although I had a mare with the prop spiral. First time I´ve tried one and it broke and wouldn´t lie flat so I´ve been touching it up but I´m not really happy and will try to avoid this in future!
Anyway heres the visuals -

Great work Stamford.
The Revell 177 is , quite rightly, regarded as one of their best. What scheme are you going for? there are quite a few funky ones to choose from.

I´m going to go for the dark grey splotches over light grey xf 24 and 25 as most people seem to do the other one! I´m planning to spray the dark first then apply some blue/white tac shapes then spray the lighter grey over and see what happens!

The Grief is looking good, it's going to be interesting to see how the paint turns out on that.

Got some done today lovely weather so I got spraying. First covered her in the darker grey then got the tac out and gave her a good dose of chicken pox.

Image

As you can see I used the advanced technique of using the wing as a handle then going back. Couldn´t find anywhere to stick a err stick. After peeling of the tac I got this.

So far so good - no major disasters. The trick for airbrush numpties like myself is to make sure you get it right - easy does it to avoid paint build up which will ruin the effect. This got me this far. I then decided to give it a light overspray to blend in the blotches and thats the last pic. Giving it a rest now to harden up. The fit on the dome looks a tad off the low point of the kit we shall see when the tape comes off. Quite pleased with the camo though so you can´t win em all.

splotches look good Stamford. The contrast is a bit stark, but you can tone that down with a simple filter coat, which will tie it all together

The overspray was the filter coat ! Correct terminology duely noted! Thats a first for me. Peeled off the masks from the dome and they had done their job very nicely - but the line up of the dome was a tad squiffy. Got some tamys tape out along the join lines and added some Formula 560 to tidy it up. Best white glue anywhere it fills gaps and wipes clean with water - get some and try it. Added a few blotches with a cotton bud and an old brush to disguise the join line and now I can live with it. Check out behind the dome - supposed to be some of the best cockpit detail going in 1/72 and if you squint and stare you can get a blurred idea of something somewhere going on. Well worth the few days effort.

That's coming along nicely. Overspraying with the lighter colour has done the trick there.
