Hmmm....I have taken a look at the Biggles Forum.
I wonder if I can get inspired to delve into a book and spin off a model?
Don't hold your breath!

cheers,

David

A bit of a paint disaster meant that the Beaufighter wasn't finished within the club GB time limit. Dang.
I'm having a short break from it with a pair of LB (RA25) Celicas. One of these was intended to be a blitzbau but that didn't work out.

Cars are nice and simple. No rigging, struts or canopy masking
Generally little or no filler needed too.

The Celtics have been superseded by a Ford Anglia I'm building for my brother. It's a 1/24 resin bodyshell, nothing else. Plenty of scratch building with sheet styrene. Not too fussed about accuracy, it just needs to look mildly convincing.

With typical modeller's ADHD, I have turned my attention away from the near-completed cars and onto WW1 subjects. My model club is having a Wood, Wire & Canvas themed display at the end of the year so I am putting time into things with two wings....primarily Sopwiths.

Apart from my golden oldie Frankencamel, there are 4 Roden Sopwtih Camels on the workbench (actually, 7 if you include the three Biggles builds on hold): two 2F.1 ship's camels, a TF.1 trench strafer and a 2 seat trainer.

Image

The Roden kit seats are pretty woeful, so I scratchbuilt my own using some coarse fabric to at least give an impression of basket weave and with the right shape of seat. I used that as the master for a resin mould and have been casting up reproductions. Seat belts are just 0.7mm tape painted white-ish and dotted using very sharp pencil to give an appearance of belt holes.

Sweet work! And lots of it too!

Terrific display of creativity going on here, David!
You have tons more courage than I.
I nearly passed out imagining the rigging of 4 Camels!

cheers,

David

Your replacement seats look spot on and way better than the kit parts for certain!

Thanks, peeps. The seat is about the only thing you can see in the cockpit so I wanted it to look reasonable.

David, I lived through the rigging of the Felixstowe F.2a so now I fear nothing!...

Nicely done, VV, those scratched seats are no doubt a big improvement over OOB. If you can rig a Felixstowe you can probably rig anything!

Thanks, Shaun. The replacement seats are the right shape, for a start....
Roden use exactly the same seat for every WW1 kit, which is a bit lazy if you ask me.

This is the "in progress" box. I chop up all the sprues and put the parts in this tackle box as I don't have space to have multiple model boxes around the place. This contains parts for the followin in-progress builds:
- a Fokker F.VII (Southern Cross)
- 8 Sopwith Camels
- a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
- a Sopwith Triplane
- an SE.5a
- a Beaufighter
- a Dh.80 Puss Moth
- a Curtiss Hawk III

Image

Then there's more in another tackle box

A couple of group build DNFs amongst that lot.

Any way, the focus is on the Sopwiths for now and the DR.1 for my centenary GB.

I've bulk sprayed the Camels in linen/cream and a Sopwith Triplane has been hit:

I started detailing the interior of the Strutter.

I also realised the one Camel variant I had missed was the parasol prototype Sopwith Swallow.

Rather than buy yet another kit, I have three old Academy Camels (the really horrible kit) that I built long ago but which were all crushed while moving house. I am hacking into one and will be upgrading it with the usual Roden spares to produce a Swallow.

All in all, plenty to keep me busy and yes, no shortage of rigging to look forward to...

Very creative, David!
4 on the go is presently quite enough for me! (Though I am constantly tempted to stray into the stash - Discipline! Must always finish something before wallowing in the stash!)

I plan to be at IPMS this month. Shall I bring the partly-rigged Airfix Roland?

Cheers,

David

I don't have your self-control...
I tried to forbid myself from starting anything until other projects were finished, but that failed. Ah well...

I'd love to see the Roland but I will be away that weekend so I won't be at the club meet, unfortunately. I'll have to wait til the end of next month to see it. We'll see how many of these Sopwiths I can finish by then....

I simply cannot comprehend having any more than one kit on the go! Ok, I did tackle a tiny Bandai Y-Wing in the middle of my on going build of USS Iwo Jima but all work stopped on one while the other was started and finished. Keeping track of where I was with multiple kits would just not work for me!
That said I do enjoy watching others multi-tasking :-D

I also struggle to deal with more than one model at a time on the bench, I did manage a double build of sorts with my Hawk and Jet Provost builds earlier this year but that is a rarity. You look pretty much organised for multiple builds there, VV.

So....the vandalism now occurs in a dedicated man-cave.....with a spray booth :party

I have also discovered UV glue: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=19014;

Currently working on a Bristol Fighter (Roden 1/72) for a Biggles forum group build. The UV glue is making the job of rigging so much easier, plus I don't think I ever would have got the wings attached without this stuff. It's a bit of a nightmare with this kit.
