Martin R's Musings
Re: Martin R's Musings
So, still chuntering on with the Airfix / Otaki / Arii 1/48th Hellcat, a DNF from the Naval II GB. I have tidied up the paintwork in a few places, cut back with a well-used piece of wet n dry, then kleared and begun decalling. Here's where I am.
The prop is just dry-fitted at the moment and needs the yellow prop tips added. I was pleased with the way the mounting was sorted. (The engine is resin and had no hole for a prop shaft to go). I very carefully drilled in a hole in the correct position on the engine, starting with a small micro-drill and ending up with the largest micro-drill I had (1.6mm). Even if I had a larger one, I would have started losing detail at the front of the gearbox reduction gear fairing. However, the kit prop had a hole at the back to take a prop shaft which had a diameter of ~2.5mm. So, what to do? Well, I drilled out the kit prop shaft centrally to 1.5mm and inserted a piece of 1.5mm brass rod in the back. I trimmed both the prop shaft and the brass rod to length so the prop would sit where it should. The following may give some idea of what I'm talking about.
Next things to sort are the remainder of the decals (for the serial, I'll have to mask out over part of the rear fuselage white band and paint it the camo colour), then continue detail painting the prop tips, wheels and canopy frame lines and get that on. After that, it's washing, dirtying and adding the smaller parts.
regards,
Martin

Good solution.
Looking very smart in those markings.

Re: Martin R's Musings
Invasion stripes on the fuselage are perfec!
Sometimes the talent consists exactly in that: try five dozen times when others stop at three dozen...! (F.Labelle)
I think that modeling is a subtle mix of zen philosophy and absolute crazyness - but in my case I would not dare to specify the respective percentage of each......

Fantastic paint work. The invasion strips are really stunning.

Good thinking regarding the prop mounting and that is some great paintwork Martin.

Success! Just took, resized and posted above pic via my mobile. Not bad for a technical illiterate.

Nice Hellcat! I've done that scheme on a Matchbox 1/72 kit, and it's one of my favourites.

Hi Stuart,
Despite consulting the manual, I couldn't work out how to resize pics, so I downloaded a photo-editor app with that functionality.
So the procedure is:
Take photo,
Resize in photo_editor
Upload to PB
Save img code on clipboard
When posting on uamf, take code off clipboard (press and hold on post entry window until clipboard icon appears)

Regards
Martin

Re: Martin R's Musings
Great looking He-111!
Is that the new Airfix kit?
Coincidence - I also have the Otaki Hellcat in the stash with some aftermarket RN markings.
cheers,
David

The Heinkel is indeed the new Airfix.
The Otaki Hellcat is an easy build, but needs a new engine, exhausts and some help in the cockpit imho.

Martin
Re: Martin R's Musings
So, here's the new Airfix HeIIIP finished. I quite fancy one of the forthcoming H versions with the torpedo, if the schemes are different.
'Course, I'd need another Eduard mask set.

And here's the Hobbyboss Yak 3, which I finished in 2 weeks as a mojo-restorer. It worked, although I almost immediately broke off the pitot tube and haven't got round to replacing it.

Re: Martin R's Musings
Both very nice finishes Martin; I like the look of the '111 and (like a lot of things) I really ought to get on with the one I have!
Best wishes
