What about a stipple brush for mottling? Using a soft brush, cut off most of the length of the bristles, leaving only a couple of mm at most. Touch that to the paint, use up a lot of it on a spare surface, then apply the remainder sparingly with vertical action. The length of bristle and vertical action both need practice before you tackle your prize model!
I have not had much need for this method since I started airbrushing.

Really nice work on the 109s.

What about using oil paint on the Heinkel? It might make the edges feather easier. Never tried this though.

Thanks for the replies guys. Shaun, this is the scheme I'm aiming for

Image

Mediterranean scheme. Dark green over sand. The edges don't look to be too soft on the green patches so I may give the stipple brush a go :)
Finished the Hasegawa 109

I'll get some more pics in daylight tomorrow.
Two coats of Humbrol 87 on the Airfix kit

I'll try to remove the seam lines on the bottom :-|

Nigel,
Seam lines are legitimate under the rear fuselage of a 109. Hope I am not too late!
And the printing process cannot show mottling properly. The edges would most likely be soft. So take it very softly with the stippling.

David is correct. The rear fuselage was assembled from left and right halves using a rolled Z flange to hold them together. So there is a seam in real life. I have a book some where with a picture of the of this. I dig it out and post it.

Found it!

The blotches on both the Heinkel and the '109 are very likely to have soft edges, Nigel as chances are the scheme would have been applied by ground crew using a spray gun and no masking mats or suchlike. I think it would be difficult to replicate this type of camo using sponges and if you are not using an airbrush it might be easier to brush paint the blotches and put up with them having hard edges - I've seen a number of models with similar schemes brush painted and if care is taken the effect can be pleasing enough. Another technique is to use rattle cans and mask off the splodges with blu-tak, which can also work well. Blame the Luftwaffe for all this hassle - they obviously didn't have future modellers like us in mind when they dreamed up their colour schemes! :ha:

PS. Even though I knew this, I did not save the seam on my own recently-completed 109, so I have lightly pencilled it in on the underside.

And here is where it stands

Image

2 greys on the wings and fuselage top. A bit of grey to go on the sides and this is decal ready :)
While waiting for paints to dry, this trundled out from it's box and got built

Nice kit. Some very small parts though. I was lucky not to lose any. Should probably have left the tracks off to make painting easier :-| I added some foreign currency left over from the European holiday of 1984  just to give it a better sit.

Nigel, you have proven that tanks are money sinks! I love this shot with coins, just don't show it to pacifists. They'll use it without your permission. :) Also, if you loose the seam under I would just delicately run it with scribin tool or xacto knife and you are done.

'109 is coming on well, Nigel and I spy another Airfix Cromwell being built - I seem to have seen one or two of these on here recently. It looks to be a great kit of the tank and I will pick one up at some point to go with my Tamiya 1/35th example. It's often worth putting a bit of ballast in AFV models to improve the sit as tracks can be quite springy - it varies kit to kit, some are fine. What are the European coins as a matter of interest? 1984 is well prior to the introduction of the Euro.

The Cromwell looks to have gone together very well and very quickly too!

Thanks Marek and Shaun. Here is my stash of euro currency

Image

It contains Dutch, Danish, Austrian, German, Yugoslavian, Italian, and French. I did have more but my Airfix B-29 swallowed a goodly portion
Here's the 109, again fuselage sides done with a small piece of sponge

Image

Image

After checking Google pics for Heinkel schemes, I found hard edged and soft edged camo so I've done this

Image

I'm happy to see it move forward :)
