Good start Toby. It's well worth the effort opening up stuff like that as IMHO it can really help make the difference between a good model and a great one.

Task Shaun. Vallejo MA gungrey for the crank case and their steel for the cylinders with a black wash.

Engine now finished. Not happy about some of the spark pug leads(don't work when tired being the motto here) but I will position the engine so they won't be seen.

I've decided to go for the D.III 8349/18, Kest 4b September 1918 option. The red is up for debate. I've found Vallejo Fire red looks fairly close but would it have been Jasta red?

Engine and nacelle now joined together. Wood finish applied to inside of fuselage. I used Vallejo natural wood as an undercoat and the dry brush their transparent woodgrain on top

You've got the wood effect just right, it really looks excellent. The engine looks right at home in the cowling!
Best wishes

Great progress and I agree, the wood effect is very good. I would imagine that colour schemes will largely be guesswork on WW I types and will often rely upon first hand witness evidence due to the lack of colour photography and of surviving machines in their original paint. I've seen debates over schemes based upon the protagonists attempting to translate the shades of black, white and grey in the available photos into colours such as red, yellow and what have you and then arguing the toss amongst themselves.

The paintwork on that Stearman looks terrific and detail is super. Another great thread

Thanks all and yes Shaun you bang on about interpretation. I might paint then all puce and cerise and then defy anyone to prove I'm wrong
One side of the fuselage interior done. I thought I'd photograph it on a white back ground but it confused the camera and looks darker than it is. Next time I'll adjust the exposure settings to compensate.
